Support CDC tools to detect HAIs and combat antibiotic resistance Take action: Click here to send a letter to Congress supporting funding for infection prevention and antibiotic resistance programs. About the request: Voicing your support to Congress will reinforce the letter sent by APIC and 53 other organizations dedicated to healthcare-associated infection (HAI) elimination. Congress has heard from prominent public health officials, but the individuals Congress needs to hear from are their constituents in the field. Join APIC and other organizations in requesting $32 million for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) and Prevention Epicenters, $264 million for the CDC’s Antibiotic Resistance Solutions Initiative, and $30 million for the Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD) Initiative. NHSN and the Prevention Epicenters Program: HAIs are among the leading causes of preventable harm and death in the United States, with 1 in 25 patients contracting an HAI. NHSN, our national tracking system, and the Prevention Epicenters research program, are critical tools to address scientific gaps in HAI detection and prevention. Increased NHSN funding will not increase reporting requirements, however it will allow 17,000 facilities to access NHSN. Increased NHSN funding will support expanded tracking of antibiotic use and trends, which are vital to the fight against antibiotic resistance. Antibiotic Resistance (AR) Solutions Initiative: Antibiotic resistance causes over 2 million illnesses and contributes to 23,000 deaths. The AR Solutions Initiative will establish state prevention programs to better identify and track outbreaks. The Initiative would also support the development of an isolate bank to provide a complete collection of current resistant threats. Funding would accelerate outbreak detection through a network of regional AR laboratories. Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD) Initiative: The AMD Initiative utilizes microbiology and bioinformatics capabilities to find infectious disease outbreaks. The nation’s investment in AMD will transform how the U.S. public health system detects and responds to known and emerging infectious diseases.
