WORD SORTS Sound Sorts Sort by sound before sorting by pattern Picture sort-students identify the phoneme or unit of sound o Identify and categorize speech sounds such as initial sounds, blends, and vowel sounds Word sort-sort by sound of the word o Identify the sound, then the spelling o Example: tape is a long a sound o Now notice word tape as VCe pattern not taip Rhyming sort Blind Sorts Student is not looking at the words during a blind sort Use key words or pictures such as pin and ten Adult or another student selects a word such as fin Student points to or says the matching key word or picture. Writing blind sort-done the same way, but student writes the word to match the pattern Pattern Sorts Sort by: Vowel pattern Word families or rimes Consonant and vowel patterns such as VCCV Guess the Sort First player does not name the sort, but puts down two-three key words or pictures Second player chooses a word-tries to guess the category Students may also write words to match the category giving them the opportunity to pay attention to the spelling and the patterns.
