WORD SORTS
Sound Sorts
Sort by sound before sorting by pattern
 Picture sort-students identify the phoneme or unit of sound
o Identify and categorize speech sounds such as initial sounds,
blends, and vowel sounds
 Word sort-sort by sound of the word
o Identify the sound, then the spelling
o Example: tape is a long a sound
o
Now notice word tape as VCe pattern not taip
 Rhyming sort
Blind Sorts





Student is not looking at the words during a blind sort
Use key words or pictures such as pin and ten
Adult or another student selects a word such as fin
Student points to or says the matching key word or picture.
Writing blind sort-done the same way, but student writes the word to
match the pattern
Pattern Sorts
Sort by:
 Vowel pattern
 Word families or rimes
 Consonant and vowel patterns such as VCCV
Guess the Sort
 First player does not name the sort, but puts down two-three key words
or pictures
 Second player chooses a word-tries to guess the category
Students may also write words to match the category giving them the
opportunity to pay attention to the spelling and the patterns.
Word Hunts
Word hunts allow students to make the connection between reading and
writing.






Use a familiar book or one that was read
This allows students to connect reading/writing/meaning
Brainstorm words that may fit the sorts
Use the dictionary to check
Write a short story using word sorts and word hunt words
Draw and label a picture
Speed Sorts
 Develops fluency and automaticity
 Time several sorts
 Beat yourself/the teacher/parent/student partner
