What are the Digestive
and Urinary systems?
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Body first has to digest or break down food
small materials
 Can Cells use food if it not broken down?
  the food enters the blood into the cell

1. THE MOUTH
Chewing food (Teeth-adults have 32) is the first
step of digestion
 Tongue moves food so it can be chewed & have
taste buds – pushes food to be swollowed
 Saliva also has chemicals that digest food ( it
moisten food)

EPIGLOTTIS
Moves to cover your trachea when you swallow
 no food goes into the wrong pipe
food goes into the esophagus

2.ESOPHAGUS
Tube that carries food to the stomach
 Esophagus pushes food by squeezing its rings of
muscles in a pattern.

3.STOMACH
A tight round muscle at the bottom on the
esophagus
 Mouth Esophagus  Stomach
 The muscle prevent food from moving back to the
esophagus.

Stomach walls can stretch to store all food from a
meal
 Stomach walls squeeze food with the help of
fluids.
 The walls of the stomach ooze mucus to form a
protective lining and to keep the stomach from
being digested.

4.INTESTINES
Mouth Esophagus Stomach
Intestines
 Its muscles squeeze food coming from the
stomach along in one direction
 Liver &Pancreas send chemicals to digest
food in intestines

VILLI

Tiny finger shaped structures that give the small
intestine more surface area to absorb food.
LARGE INTESTINE (COLON)
Food waste moves to a wider tube called large
intestine
 Helpful bacteria  make vitamins & keep
bacteria causing diseases away.
 Large intestine takes water and salts from
wastes solid waste
 Muscles squeeze to push the waste out of the
body

THE URINARY SYSTEM
Body cells form wastes which poison the body if
not removed.
 Urinary system gets rid of the waste in the blood

KIDNEYS
Remove waste from your blood
 Regulate and control levels of water, salt,
calcium, nutrients and other chemicals in body.

URINARY BLADDER
The bladder stores urine until it leaves the body
 Urine= Waste + Water

LUNGS
Carbon dioxide also is a waste product.
 It’s removed by the lungs – takes in oxygen &
removed carbon dioxide

ACTIVITIES

Draw a flow diagram explaining the path of the
food being digested.
ACTIVITIES
True or False:
1. Chewing makes food large enough to be
swallowed.
2. Saliva has chemicals that digest food.
3. If someone stands upside down, he won’t be able
to swallow anymore.
4. The kidneys have no role in the urinary system
ACTIVITIES
Fill in the blanks
1. Food has to be changed broken down before
your -------- use it.
2. The -------------- pushes food to the stomach by
squeezing its rings of muscles in a pattern.
3. The ---------- moves to cover your trachea when
you swallow.
4. ----------- help small intestine do its job by
increasing the surface area.
PROJECT
In groups of 4 or 5
1. You need to draw a digestive system model
2. First draw a sketch or print a big sketch of the
digestive system on a card board
3. You’ll need to label the model
4. Use any material in order to fill in the organs as
seen in the proceeding slide.
