He had made a deal with Hitler to keep the two countries from fighting. Hitler broke the deal and Stalin joined the Allied countries. Dwight D. Eisenhower p.562 The 34th President of the US from 1953-1961. Supreme Allied Commander in WWII, he directed the Allied invasion of Europe, specifically planned the Normandy invasion. It was also known as June 6th or D-Day. Harry S. Truman p.564 The 33rd President of the US from 1945-1953. He led the country at the end of WWII after FDR suddenly died. Truman had an immediate impact when he had to decide whether or not to drop the atomic bombs on Japan. How did the Axis dictators cause WWII? (p.559) They forced the Allied nations to fight because the nations surrounding them were being invaded by the Axis countries. How did Americans at home help in the war effort? (p. 561) They saved and recycled useful materials Children collected scrap metal, bottle caps and rubber bands which were recycled into military products. They took jobs in defense factories. How did the Allies defeat Hitler’s forces? (p. 563) Soviet forces pushed west after winning the Battle of Stalingrad in 1943. The United States and other Allies pushed east after the Normandy invasion of 1944. The Allies freed Belgium, France and Luxembourg by September and pushed towards Germany. The Soviets had taken Berlin and Germany surrendered on May 7th 1945. How was Japan defeated in 1945? (p. 564 & 565) The Allies dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
