AS Level Music Summer Work
As part of the AS course you will study Bach’s ‘Brandenburg Concerto in F major’ (1st
movement only)
Tasks:
1. Research the Composer Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 – 1750)
Within your research include:
 What he composed
 Features of his music
2. Listen to:
J.S. Bach: Brandenburg Concerto No.2 in F, BWV 1047, 1st movement.
Listen to it a few times so you become familiar with it. (It is easily available on
YouTube)
Write a detailed description of the music. Include in your writing: instruments,
texture, tempo, dynamics, melody, rhythm and any other feature you think is
relevant. (Remember this is a piece of baroque music so think about the features of
baroque you learnt about at GCSE).
3. Choose another piece of instrumental music from the Baroque period to listen to.
Compare this with Bach’s Brandenburg concerto. How are they similar and how are
they different? Write a detailed comparison of the two works.
Finally:
Another important part of the AS level course is performing. Make sure you practise
your instrument regularly over the holiday.
Prepare at least one piece to performance standard ready to perform in September.
