THE ENVIRONMENT
Examples of how humans have interacted and changed
the environment through the ages.
EARLY MAN
 Technology-can effect the
environment like slash-and-burn
farming.
 Hunters/Gathers-Searching for
food.
 Environment- Natural disasters.
 Droughts-Needed to find water
to survive.
 Homo Habilis- stone tools
FARMERS AND CITY DWELLERS
 Taxation- To provide local needs.
 Domesticate- To tame animals.
 Irrigation- Ways to move water to
land.
 Social classes- People have
different roles in society to help
the community.
MESOPOTAMIA
 Standing Army- A permanent
army.
 Silt- Soil and tiny rocks carried or
deposited on the land by
floodwaters.
 Ziggurat- The largest and tallest
temple in every Sumerian citystate.
 Caravans- A group of traders
traveling together on a long
journey.
EGYPT
 Papyrus- A paper-like material
which ancient Egyptians wrote.
 Delta- A triangle-shaped piece of
fertile land formed from soil
deposited at the mouth.
 Cataracts- Rapids, or waterfalls.
 Code of Hammurabi- The
collection of laws that
Hammurabi organized for the
people of Babylon to follow
GREECE
 Majority Rule- A system which
every person has a vote, the idea
with most votes wins.
 Bards- A professional storyteller
who traveled place to place telling
stories/songs about gods and
goddesses.
Trade- You can get new resources by
trading with other communities.
ROME
 Roads- Shi Huangdi ordered that
all roads, as well as the carts that
traveled on the roads, have the
same width.
 Concrete- Is made the same way
as it was in ancient Rome.
 Colosseum- Where there would
be “games” and people would be
killed.
