Over160registrantsforHPC-TS,themeetingthatfromFebruary24to26willbringtoTrieste
someoftheworld’sleadingnamesin“supercomputing”,currentlyoneofthemostinnovative
fieldsinscience.KeyguestspeakerwillbeJackDongarra(UniversityofTennessee),aworld
expertinhigh-performancecomputing(HPC).Theeventhasbeenorganizedwithinthe
frameworkoftheMHPC,thejointSISSA/ICTPmaster’scourseinHPC.
Giganticcomputersabletoprocessevenmoregiganticamountsofdata,appliedtothemost
diversefields(navaldesign,biomedicalresearch,astrophysics,computergraphicsanimations,big
dataanalytics…):that’ssupercomputing.Triesteisbecominganimportantcentreforthe
discipline:inSeptember2014,acollaborationbetweentheInternationalSchoolforAdvanced
Studies(SISSA)andtheAbdusSalamInternationalCentreforTheoreticalPhysics(ICTP)gaverise
totheMaster’scourseinHPC(MHPC)andatthesametimetheSISSA-basedsupercomputer
Ulysses,abletoprovideTriestescientistswithover35millioncomputerprocessinghours,began
towork.AnditiswithinthesameMHPCframeworkthatameetingwillbeheld(onthemain
premisesofSISSA)fromFebruary24to26thatwillbringtogethersomeoftheworld’sleading
expertsinsupercomputing.
Theconferencewillbeattendedbyover160participants,withalargenumberofrepresentatives
fromlargeandsmallindustrialcompanies.Supercomputingis,infact,becomingincreasingly
attractivetotheworldofindustry.TheofficialsponsoroftheworkshopisEurotech,theFriuli
VeneziaGiulia-based“global”companythatdesignsandbuildsleading-edgeHPCsystems.
Theconference
TheconferencewillbeopenedbyJackDongarra,distinguishedprofessor(anacademictitlegiven
toscientistswhohavedistinguishedthemselvesfortheiroutstandingscientificproduction)from
theUniversityofTennessee,aleadingexpertinthefieldandco-editoroftheTOP500project,the
twice-yearlyrankingoftheworld’smostpowerfulsupercomputers.Amongtheothermajor
figuresparticipatingintheworkshopareWolfgangBangerth,fromTexasA&M(USA)andauthor
oftheDEALIIreferencelibraryforcomputationalmathematics,andNicolaMarzari,professorat
theEcolePolytechniqueFédéraledeLausanneandvisitingprofessorattheBostonMIT.
Theworkshopwillcompriseseveralsessions:theapplicationsofsupercomputingtophysicsof
theearthandastronomy,materialsscience,mathematicsandhighenergyphysics.Duringeach
session,alongsidethekeyfiguresandexpertsinthefield,studentsontheMHPCandinparticular
thosewhocompletedthecourseinDecember2015willbegiventheopportunitytopresenttheir
dissertationsandprojectsinsubjectsrangingfromearthsciencestohighenergyphysics,tothe
optimizationofsatellitedataandthedevelopmentofparallelalgorithmsfordatamining.The
workshopaimstopublicizethemaster’scourseinternationallyamongpotentialfuturestudents,
toexpandthecommunitythatrevolvesaroundtheMHPCandtoincreaseawarenessamongthe
“computing”communities(especiallyinindustry)thattraininginsupercomputingisanabsolute
musttoday.
February25isalsothedayofthediplomaawardsceremonyforthe2014-2015course(thefirst
MHPCcourse),withthepresentationoftheprizeforthebestdissertation.

TheMHPCisorganizedbytwoworld-renownedcentresofexcellence,theInternationalSchool
forAdvancedStudies(SISSA)ofTriesteandtheInternationalCentreforTheoreticalPhysics
AbdusSalam(ICTP)ofTriestewhichguaranteeitstop-levelqualityandinternationalstanding.
Theteachingmethodsprioritizepracticalaspects,encouragingstudentstotrytheirhandatrealworldprofessionalproblemsandactivities.TheexcellenceoftheMaster’scourseisconfirmedby
theteachingfaculty,allexpertsfromtheacademicworldorfromleadinginternationalcompanies
suchasINTEL,andbythemajorpartnershipsandsponsorshipsbyresearchinstitutionsand
industrialcompaniesinterestedinthetrainingofnewHPCprofessionals.
