Infectious Disease
INSTITUTION: Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The student will be instructed to participate in the evaluation of patients with a variety of
infectious disease problems. Topic/cases will include basic infectious diseases (antibiotics,
urinary tract infections, pneumonia, wound infections, bacteremias, central nervous system
infections, etc.) to complex multisystem disorders (FUO, multiple organ failure, HIV). The
rotation is hospital based, but outpatient clinics are held weekly reflecting the typical work of
an ID Practitioner.

GOALS
A. Effective Communication Goals
Educational Objectives:
1. Understand rational for antimicrobial selection.
2. Become familiar with evaluating and treating HIV infection.
3. See a variety of nosocomial infections and their impact.
4. Interface with the microbiology lab and pathology.
Method of Evaluation: Direct observation by faculty and residents during direct patient care
and review of other clinical and didactic activities (admission history and physical, progress
notes, discharge summary, discharge instructions, prescriptions, hospital orders, case reports,
etc.)
B. Application of Basic Science Knowledge in the Practice of Medicine
Educational Objectives: Develop of medical vocabulary and use written language effectively.
Method of Evaluation: Direct supervision of student care by residents and attendings.
C. Lifelong Learning
Educational Objectives: Recognize personal limits in knowledge and experience, and pursue
information necessary to understand and solve diagnostic and therapeutic problems.
Method of Evaluation: Direct observation by residents and attendings of student day-to-day
activities of the team.
