Role Profile Role: Data Analyst Home Team: Supporter Data Purpose of role: To contribute to organisational marketing effectiveness using advanced data management and analysis tools, database and spreadsheet applications Reports to: Supporter Data Manager Required to: Expertise: Deliver outcomes: Needs to have: Provide statistical analysis relevant to the work of the department, using Friends of the Earth’s databases and other statistical records or databases, as appropriate Proven ability to write SQL (or ability to learn how to do so, and understanding of SQL) Identify new ways of interpreting data, and make recommendations on how to maximise their value to Friends of the Earth Proven ability to interpret complex data sets, identifying trends and other conclusions relevant to the data analysis Initiate, develop and manage analysis projects in line with the team’s strategy, plans and individually agreed objectives Proven ability to use Excel and Access for analysis and presentation purposes Responsible to do the tasks they agree to take from the project team, balancing their work between work arising from the project and other work and to prioritise effectively and to work together with other project team members to bring their experience to bear on the common objective in accordance with Project Management Guidelines Experience of applying data analysis skills in a direct marketing environment/or IDM Diploma or equivalent. This would include statistical analysis using industry standard software tools. Select, extract and manipulate data for specific organisational purposes, primarily for the direct marketing programme, ensuring data standards are maintained Develop others: Experience of using a relational database for data management or analysis Proven experience of using data to recruit, retain and develop supporters/customers to maximise income Train and support less experienced team members and other colleagues May have delegated authority for allocating and managing the work of other staff or consultants Experience of customer relationship management programmes Focus of expertise: Build relationships: Work with colleagues in the department to advise on supporter data use Apply analytical skills and knowledge of data sources and databases to generate relevant marketing data, to further the operational and strategic aims of a specialist area Liaise with IT to specify technical developments for the contacts database Focus of development: Work with external agencies, as appropriate to develop Friends of the Earth’s use of data for a range of purposes Developing familiarity with wider Friends of the Earth processes, and organisational issues and other potential determinants of data analysis and variation Present results of analyses and communicate them in a way that makes them understandable to colleagues Increasing knowledge of statistical software packages and relational database administration Ideas and solutions: Contribute to any project teams charged with database development representing the needs and views of own function; provide advice on the development of working practices Career stage: Specialist Other essential requirements for the role-holder: None Levels: 3 – 7, references at 4 and 6
