Climate Change - Canada – General Assembly
By Willow Black
During the twenty first century, ice covering the Arctic Ocean has begun disappearing in
record rates, because of increasing temperatures caused by higher carbon emissions. The sea ice
has reached its lowest level since the records began in the 1980’s. The Arctic sea ice is
decreasing at a rate of 4 percent per decade, and is expected to lower twenty percent by 2050.
Climate change is a disaster for the world. Especially in coastal areas and small island
developing states, (SIDS), the higher waves can cause increased erosion. Some small islands
even disappear into the ocean. The immigrants from the islands then have to migrate to other
islands which get too crowded. These ‘climate change refugees’ need help to relocate. Because
the larger, more industrialized countries emit more carbons, they are more obliged to help the
developing nations with relocation of refugees. Additionally, about five percent of grain has
declined in yield for every one degree of temperature change. A multitude of major crops like
wheat decline in their yield. The United Nations (UN) is trying to address the cause by lowering
carbon emissions and help the world have a lower carbon economy. A total of 195 countries
signed the Paris Climate Agreement. They agreed to limit global warming to acceptable limits of
just below two degrees Celsius, which will reduce the impact of climate change.
Human activity is the cause of climate change. The fuels, gasses, and oils that the economy
uses cause most of the climate change that is affecting the planet now. Canada attended the Paris
Climate Conference and signed the pact. They also allotted an astounding two billion dollars to
fund a project which reduces carbon and agreed to limit development on coastal areas because
the sea levels might rise and wipe out developments. Canada has recently entered collaboration
with the US to develop clean energy research. Canada is co-chairing an oil and gas subcommittee to help reduce methane emissions, which is what fuels ovens, water heaters and cars.
Even though for Canada climate change is partly good by opening trade routes and reducing
voyage times by 40 percent on northern sea routes, Canada is obviously doing whatever it can to
stop global warming.
Canada unfalteringly strives to stop climate change. They are helping developing countries
lessen their emissions because they are poor and cannot help themselves. Canada is acting as a
climate leader to get rid of climate change. Being in the Paris Climate Conference, Canada works
with international partners to achieve effective and ambitious global agreements for climate
change. Canada seeks the establishment of a durable, legally binding agreement. The climate
change agreement will provide collective vision to keep global temperature increases below 2
degrees Celsius. Climate change is one of the greatest threats to our planet. From droughts and
coastal flooding to the expanding melt of the ice in the Arctic, the impacts of climate change
compel Canada to take action.
Global warming is another name for climate change. Global warming is becoming an even
bigger problem due to the increased use of carbon emitting fuels. The warm temperatures are
causing the Arctic ice to melt which causes coastal erosion, higher waves, and decreased grain
yields. All those things affect small islands. The more industrialized countries should pay for the
damage done by floods and coastal erosion because they contribute more to global warming than
these small islands. The UN is signing pacts like the Paris Climate Agreement to globally agree
to cut down on carbon emissions and help developing countries do the same. Canada wants to
stop global warming effects and is involved in many partnerships to find solutions. Nobody
wants to stop climate change as much as Canada.
