Study Guide for Exam 2 – Chapters 4, 5, 6
Chapter 4
Go over the take home on chapter 4. The test will contain questions from
chapters 5 and 6 but you need to know concepts from chapter 4 to find
probabilities in chapters 5 and 6.
Chapter 5
Section 5.1
 Distinguish between discrete and continuous variables.
 For a given situation indicate what are the possible values of the random
variable.
 Given a frequency table, determine the probability distribution of the random
variable
 Construct the probability histogram for the random variable.
 What are the requirements for a probability distribution?
 Use the probability distribution to find probabilities.
Section 5.3
 Evaluate factorials with the calculator
 Evaluate binomial coefficients with the calculator
 What is a binomial experiment?
 What conditions must be satisfied by Bernoulli trials?
 For a binomial experiment:
develop tree diagrams,
write the sample space
find the probabilities of each one of the outcomes in the sample space
using these results, construct a probability distribution for the random
variable
 Given a Bernoulli experiment, find probabilities with the binomial probability
formula
 Given a Bernoulli experiment, find probabilities with the shortcut in the
calculator binompdf(n,p,x)
 Given a Bernoulli experiment, find probabilities with the program binomial83
in the calculator
 Identify the shape of a binomial distribution according to the value of p
(probability of success)
 Find the mean of a binomial random variable
 Find the standard deviation of a binomial random variable
 Use the binomial probability formulas to approximate probabilities of
hypergeometric distributions.

What is a normally distributed variable?
What are the parameters of a normally distributed variable?
Basic properties of normal distributions
Given the mean and standard deviation, sketch the normal curve
Relationship between probabilities/percentages, and areas under the normal
curve.
Basic properties of the standard normal distribution
Section 6.2 – Standard normal curve
 Using the standard normal table to find areas
Areas to the left of a given z score
Areas to the right of a given z score
Areas between any two given z scores
 Using the standard normal table to find z scores
Find the z score if you are given an area to the left
Find the z score if you are given an area to the right
Find z (z sub alpha)
Section 6.3 – Normal curves, the general case
 For any normally distributed variable, find areas under the normal curve
To the right, left or between any two values of the variable.
 Finding areas under the normal curve using the shortcut in the calculator
Normalcdf(
 Finding areas under the normal curve using the normal83 program
 The 68.26 - 95.44 - 99.74 rule
 Given an area/probability/percentage, determine a z-score
 Given an area/probability/percentage, determine a score
 Determine deciles and percentiles.
 Finding scores and percentiles with the shortcut in the calculator invNorm(
 Finding scores and percentiles with the invnor83 program
Section 6.5
 What are the requirements to be able to use the normal distribution to
approximate a binomial distribution
 Find the continuity correction factor
 Using the normal distribution to approximate a binomial distribution
