The conference will be divided into a colloquium format with three
different yet interlinked themes with a different keynote speaker for each.
The topics include the ideals and relevance of an Islamic state in the 21st
century; Firstly, questions of Shariah, secondly, Islamic feminism by
elaborating upon their historical trajectory over 14 centuries of Islamic
society, their relevance today and not withholding the need for reform and
it’s achievability. We will also juxtapose the ideal Islamic state with the
‘state’ of those who have claimed to have created one in the 21st century,
ISIS.
The project is being run because it fills in important gaps within the existing
discourse on Islamism, hence the need for it. It will address and challenge
the existing narratives about Islam and diversify the scope of discussion
around it.
The aim is to revive the intellectual ethos of Islam in line with needs of
(post) modernity. After the stupendous successes of Discover Islam Week,
we are hopeful that we have a large audience looking for the answers we
hope to provide (measured by number of conference attendees and debate
followed in student circles)

lacks of nuance. The academia draws differences between contemporary
strands of Islamism but hardly trace back discussion historically or even
theoretically e.g. the Prophet’s state of Madina and the Islamic Empires of
the past. This will enhance LSE’s already well-established reputation of
going beyond polemics and trying to unearth the discourse closest to
reality.
Furthermore, LSE is also an international institute with students (and future
leaders) from more than 140 nationalities including the Muslim world and
beyond. The general interest sparked by the War on Terror and the rise of
quasi states like ISIS since the past two decades has made this an everrelevant discussion to have. The LSE SU Islamic Society holds frequent
events but this in an innovative one-day conference (inspired by our
Discover Islam Week) that has strong links with academic discussions at the
LSE.

The LSE SU Islamic Society has a large membership base and our events are
very well attended across all groups of society, thus we can potentially
advertise to a huge audience. The AF logo would appear with any
advertisement for the event e.g. Newsletters, flyers, posters and all social
media. We would open the event with honourable mention and thanks to
the Annual Fund. Our representatives write for events in the Beaver at a
regular basis and will not forget to mention the generosity of the AF.
No
Most projects of the LSE SU Islamic Society are self-sustaining beyond the
first few years. This is because their success attracts sponsors as with
Discover Islam Week and Charity Week. We hope the case will be similar
with this conference. If it is deemed a success by the Society, we may carry
it on in the future with reduced and partial funding by the AF and
eventually will aim for it to be entirely self-sustaining.
We will endure our conference is a public event, thus not limited to
members of our society. This has worked well for us in the past (e.g. 60%
non member attendance for ‘Is Islam the Underlying Cause of ExtremismFebruary 2014). Thus, we will be glad to host academics and students
irrespective of any bias.
Our speaker events are always followed by QnA sessions thus allowing the
audience to express their views and question those of the speaker. The
registration will be first come, first serve

US Speaker from academic
circles
We are budgeting under the
assumption of inviting two UK
based academics and one
speaker from abroad, most
likely the US. However, most
of the potential speakers from
our list of US speakers
frequently visit the UK for
lectures and conferences. If
we are lucky enough, we may
be able to save on the flight
and accomodation costs if
any of those speakers would
be visiting London anyway. In
that case, we would return
the unused funds to Annual
Fund. We will be able to
finalise this by early
September and are happy to
sort out return of finances
around then.This is on the
asusmption, that if needed,
an economy class ticket from
the US will cost something
less than 700 GBP and
keeping 300 GBP for a three
day accomodation period with
100 GBP per day at either of
the LSE accomodations or a
3-4 star hotel.
