Purpose: To provide PTs with treatment strategies to effectively manage patients with lymphedema
Objectives:
 Provide the participant basic anatomy/physiology of the lympho-venous system
 Differentiate lymphedema from other edemas
 Provide the participant basic evaluation and treatment strategies
 Compare/contrast prospective surveillance vs traditional models of care
 Identify patient self-care strategies including use of garments, pumps and exercise critical for
successful long term management
Biography:
Rachel Larsen, PT, CLT is president of Forté Rehabilitation and Wellness Center, a free standing physical therapy
practice dedicated to restoring quality of life for cancer patients and survivors. She received her initial training in
the management of lymphedema in 1997, promptly established the lymphedema clinic at Health South RIOSA,
and managed that clinic for five years prior to establishing Forte in 2002. She has served as an adjunct faculty
member for the UTHSCSA Department of Physical Therapy, and has been guest lecturer at the UTHSCSA and the
Army-Baylor physical therapy schools. She is a frequent lecturer for numerous professional and community
organizations on the subject of lymphedema and other physical disorders resulting from cancer and the effects
of treatment. She authored chapter twelve, “Decongestive Therapy for the Treatment of Lymphedema” for the
fifth edition of “Beards Massage, Principles and Practice of Soft Tissue Manipulation.” She is an active sponsor
for the non-profit organization ThriveWell, which offers free exercise, art, and nutrition classes for cancer
survivors, funds cancer research, and provides financial assistance for cancer treatments. She is the creator and
producer of The Six, and annual musical production that brings to life the stories of six local cancer survivors
through storytelling, music and dance. This project brings attention to peoples’ struggles and triumphs over
cancer, and benefits ThriveWell Cancer Foundation. She is a member of the Oncology Section of the American
Physical Therapy Association and the Texas Physical Therapy Association.
