World War II Events
5-4.4 Explain the principal events related to
the involvement of the United States in
World War II, including campaigns in North
Africa and the Mediterranean; major battles
of the European theater such as the Battle of
Britain, the invasion of the Soviet Union, and
the Normandy invasion; and events in the
Pacific theater such as Pearl Harbor, the
strategy of island-hopping, and the
bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Why did the US
get involved in
WWII?
There are several reasons:
1. A rise in European dictators (which we
already discussed.) Who were they?
2. Germany invaded Poland. Poland did
nothing to provoke Germany.
3. Japan bombed US at Pearl Harbor,
Hawaii
WRITE in SCRAPBOOK
Let’s TALK…
The Germans thought that the
treaty that ended World War I was
unfair. (Remember??)The goal of
Germany was to avenge itself for
this treaty by taking over Europe.
They also believed that Germans
were a superior people.
Let’s TALK…
The goal of the Japanese
was to establish control of
the Far East in order to
assure the economic
prosperity of the Japanese
people.
At first, the European
leaders tried to avoid war and
responded to the aggression of
Hitler’s Germany with a policy of
appeasement, giving in to his
demands. However, when
Germany invaded Poland
(unprovoked), allies Britain and
France declared war on
Germany.
Let’s TALK…
Soon Germany defeated France
and was bombing Great Britain.
Germany also invaded the Union
of Soviet Socialist Republics
(U.S.S.R.). The Congress of the
United States passed laws that
required President Roosevelt to
stay neutral.
Let’s WRITE…
However President Roosevelt tried
to help the British leader, Winston
Churchill; the leader of the free
French, Charles de Gaulle; and
the leader of the Soviet Union,
Josef Stalin, with supplies.
Let’s TALK…
After the Japanese bombing of the U.S.
Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii
President Roosevelt asked the United
States Congress to declare war on
Japan.
Let’s TALK…
Germany and Italy then declared
war on the United States in order
to support their ally, Japan.
Let’s TALK…

Britain, and the Soviet
Union became known as
the Allied Powers or the
Allies.

The battle began months before the invasion,

army's build-up of their military strength. More
than 300 planes dropped 13,000 bombs over
Normandy in advance of the invasion. Six
parachute regiments, with more than 13,000
men, also went ahead to cut railroad lines,
blow up bridges, and seize landing fields.
