Music Incorporation Lesson Plan Mr. Patrick Ralph Title: “The Planets Around the Sun” Grade Level: 2nd -3rd grade Time: 1 minute Objective: To have the students learn about the planets in our solar system To explain how the planets revolve around the star, the sun To spark creativity in a fun song about a space science topic Materials: MP3 player, singing voice Recording Source: “The Ants Go Marching” on piano; piano version found with no lyrics via http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMAS8HYwL2o Procedure: “Planets Around the Sun” to the tune of “The Ants Go Marching” Have the students listen to the music (intro music for _____ seconds) Tell them when the lyrics will be brought in and then begin singing. The lyrics are as follows: The planets revolve around the sun, hurrah; hurrah The planets revolve around the sun, hurrah; hurrah The planets revolve around the sun and spin on their axis every one. And they all go spinning, around and around . . .They go. Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, hurrah; hurrah Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars, hurrah; hurrah Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars are whirling and twirling around the sun And they all go spinning, around and around . . .. They go. Jupiter, Saturn are next in line, hurrah, hurrah Jupiter, Saturn are next in line, hurrah, hurrah Jupiter, Saturn are next in line. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto make all nine And they all go spinning, around and around . . .. They go. Teaching Tips: It might serve as a good idea to use a picture of the solar system on the board in the background of the classroom for students to follow around on. Perhaps even have a simple solar system handout for them to view with the planets in order from closest to farthest from the sun, along with fun facts about the planet. Teach the students “The Ants Go Marching” if they haven’t heard that version of the song yet, before teaching them “The Planets Around the Sun.” Hand-out lyrics of the song to the students so they can sing along to the song during the first few rounds of learning. Assessment: Have the students complete a worksheet by filling out where the planets fall from closest to farthest from the sun. Assessment can be completed through observation and listening to how and/or when the students pick up on the songs’ lyrics and begin singing along to it. Standards: Standard 1- Teachers know the subjects they are teaching. Standard 3- Teachers understand that children learn differently. Standard 5- Teachers know how to manage a classroom. Standard 8- Teachers know how to test for student progress.
