COGNITION RNSG 2572 Health Care Concepts 2 Concept –COGNITION Concept Definition Cognition is the process of thought by which an individual learns, stores, retrieves, and uses information Exemplars Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia Delirium Down Syndrome Objectives 1. Explain the concept of Cognition (including definition, antecedents, and attributes). 2. Analyze conditions which place a patient at risk for impaired cognition. 3. Identify when impaired cognition is developing (negative consequences) or has developed. 4. Discuss exemplars of common circumstances altering cognition and Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia, Delirium, and Down Syndrome. 5. Apply the nursing process (including collaborative interventions) for individuals experiencing altered cognition (including Alzheimer’s Disease/Dementia, Delirium, and Down Syndrome). 6. Demonstrate therapeutic and effective communication with patients who have Alzheimer’s Disease. Concept Analysis Diagram Note: Diagram on separate page. Explanation of Cognition Diagram: Analysis summary for Cognition: Cognition is the process of thought by which an individual learns, stores, retrieves and uses information. For this to occur the brain needs to follow the normal course of growth and development; the brain must receive adequate oxygen, blood and nutrition; and the neurological function must be intact. Higher levels of cognitive function can be developed with education. If cognition is intact, the individual is able to interpret the environment accurately, respond appropriately, communicate the events, and is able to remember and learn from the events. The ability to cognitively function is dependent upon many factors such as sleep, nutrition, blood flow, presence of disease processes and level of development. The negative outcomes of cognition include, but are not limited to, poor decision making, increased risks of injury and disease mismanagement, poor relationship skills, and victimization. Successful or positive outcomes of cognitive function might include risk reduction, the ability to maintain long term relationships and better disease control. Assignments Prior to class: 1.
