Cycles of Matter Notes Water Cycle A. The sun heats up the water and turns it into water vapor, a gas, - this is called evaporation B. The sun pulls water out of plants and turns it into water vapor, a gas, during transpiration C. Water vapor condenses, or turns back into small droplets of water, to form clouds in condensation D. Precipitation is water falling back to Earth as rain, sleet, snow, hail, etc. This cycle gives humans fresh water to use for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing, and other things. Carbon Cycle The tree does photosynthesis to make energy. It pulls in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen. The animal does respiration. It pulls in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide. This cycle gives humans oxygen to breathe. Nitrogen Cycle The atmosphere is mostly nitrogen gas. A. Decomposer bacteria breaks down dead organisms into their base elements and releases nitrogen gas into the air. B. Nitrogen fixing bacteria pull nitrogen gas from the air and changes it into ammonia, which is a fertilizer for plants. This cycle makes natural fertilizer for plants to they can grow better and make more food and oxygen for humans.
