THEATRE EXCURSIONS
2016-17
As a way of developing artistically, it is vital to see live theatre. While Flagstaff has some
wonderful theatre at Theatrikos and NAU, it is also important to see the trends in acting going on
elsewhere. This philosophy has brought FALA students to London, New York, Chicago, and –
many times – to Phoenix. I would contend that a large part of the success in our art programs is
witnessing great artists in their element.
These trips are completely optional and I encourage you to discuss which plays/cities you wish
your son/daughter to attend. I am always available to talk and help organize fund raising
opportunities, as I believe all students should be able to attend if they wish.
UTAH SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL September 1-4, 2016
$350 – Includes plays, transportation, and rooming
Monies due May 25
This will be our ninth visit to the cozy town of Cedar City, Utah. We will see four shows in
three days:
HENRY V
Prince Hal has inherited the throne as King Henry V and now must quickly act to save his
kingdom. His stunning St. Crispin’s Day speech includes some of Shakespeare’s greatest
lines, but is it enough to rally his countrymen around their new leader?
THREE MUSKETEERS
A fresh, fast-paced, and funny adaptation of one of literature’s most thrilling romantic
adventures: the dashing musketeers—and one plucky kid sister—swashbuckle their way
through nefarious villains, international intrigue, and exotic ladies. It’s “all for one and
one for all” in an action-packed update of this beloved classic.
MARY POPPINS
Everyone’s favorite nanny takes the stage in this supercalifragilistic adventure. One of
the most popular Disney movies of all time comes to life in this “practically perfect”
musical! It’s an enchanting mixture of irresistible story and unforgettable song.
MURDER FOR TWO
Everyone is a suspect in this hilarious musical murder mystery with a twist: One actor
investigates the crime. The other plays all the suspects. And they both play the piano! A
zany blend of classic musical comedy and madcap mystery, this ninety-minute whodunit
is a highly theatrical duet loaded with killer laughs.
LOS ANGELES, October 6-9, 2016
$350 – Includes plays, transportation, and rooming
Monies due August 14
MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM @ MARK TAPER FORUM
An American masterpiece, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is an incredibly powerful depiction
of rage, racism, and exploitation set in 1927 Chicago during a recording session at a
white-owned studio with the legendary singer—inspired by real-life Mother of the Blues
Gertrude “Ma” Rainey. Tony Award® winner Phylicia Rashad (director of August
Wilson’s celebrated Joe Turner’s Come and Gone at the Mark Taper Forum) directs this
groundbreaking play from Wilson’s The American Century Cycle chronicling the
African-American experience of the 20th century.
BARBEQUE @ THE GEFFEN
From Obie and Helen Hayes Award winner Robert O’Hara comes a raucous and
rollicking new comedy about sibling love and loathing. This Barbecue skewers any ideas
we have about the families we think we know.
ACTOR’S GANG
To be announced.
A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE @ AHMUNSEN
The Tony-Award winning (Best Revival of a Play & Best Director) Young Vic
production is being remounted in Los Angeles.
NEW YORK CITY, Last week of February
$1600 – Includes all art, classes, performances, transportation to and around the city, and
rooming.
Monies due in four installments; final installment due January 15
Join Ms. Henes and Mr. Levin on this exhilarating (and exhausting) journey. We will see
performances each night, take a cooking class, a dance class, visit a high school, see world
class art and meet with artists. Past shows include: Once, Sleep No More, Gypsy, Sweeney
Todd, The Iceman Cometh, Buried Child, and Big Love.
ASU GAMMAGE
SOUND OF MUSIC: October 22
BEAUTIFUL: November 26
