Objective: To create a detailed model of the Earth’s interior that accurately represents the different
layers of the Earth and describes their characteristics.
Project Requirements:
I.
Model of Earth’s Layers (required)
a. All layers and zones of the Earth must be included AND accurately labeled:
 Crust (Oceanic Crust and Continental Crust)
 Mantle
 Outer Core
 Inner Core
 Lithosphere
 Asthenosphere
b. General thickness of the Earth’s layers should be accurate
(Example: crust is thinnest layer, mantle is thickest layer etc.)
c. Try to use color and texture to represent the layers accurately:
(Example: to show which layers are cool and which are hot, and to show which layers
are rock and which are metal)
II.
Written Requirement (required)
a. Paragraph description for each layer and zone is required. Your project must include 6
written paragraphs.
 Crust
 Mantle
 Outer Core
 Inner Core
 Lithosphere
 Asthenosphere
b. Each paragraph must start with a TOPIC SENTENCE and end with a CONCLUSION
SENTENCE
c. Information to include in paragraph:
 What material is the layer/zone made of?
 Is it a melted or solid layer/zone?
 General thickness of layer/zone
 General temperature of layer/zone
 Location within the Earth
d. If you find information from sources other than our notes and text book, YOU MUST
SITE WHERE YOU GOT THE FACT FROM (website name, book title, magazine article
name etc.)
e. Final Draft must be written in INK or TYPED. (No Pencil!)
III.
Bonus Challenge Options (Not Required)
a. Make Your Model to Scale (meaning the thickness of each layer on your model
accurately represents the relative thickness of the layers of Earth in real life)
 Making Layers to Scale
1. What is the distance from the surface of Earth to the Center?
__________________ kilometers
2. How large will your model be, from the outside to the center?
___________________ centimeters
3. Divide your answer to Question 1 by the answer to Question 2 to calculate
the scale you will use when building your model.
1 centimeter
