Unit 1: Astronomy: Seasons, the Solar System, and the evolution of the Universe
Oregon State Content Standards
H1E1—Classify the bodies in our solar system based on properties and composition. Describe attributes of our galaxy and evidence
for multiple galaxies in the universe.
H2E3—Describe how the universe, galaxies, stars, and planets evolve over time.
Next generation Science Standards
ESS1.A: The Universe and Its Stars -The study of stars’ light spectra and brightness is used to identify compositional elements of
stars, their movements, and their distances from Earth.
-The Big Bang theory is supported by observations of distant galaxies receding from our own, of the measured composition of stars
and non-stellar gases, and of the maps of spectra of the primordial radiation (cosmic microwave background) that still fills the
universe.
PS4.B: Electromagnetic Radiation -Atoms of each element emit and absorb characteristic frequencies of light. These characteristics
allow identification of the presence of an element, even in microscopic quantities.
Objectives:
Meeting benchmark
1) I will be able to explain how astronomers use light from starts to estimate the composition, motion, and distance
from the star.
2) I will be able to relate periods of time to the appropriate astronomical cycle (day/rotation, year/revolution).
3) I will be able to predict how the moon will appear based on its position in orbit around Earth.
4) I will be able to identify what causes seasons on Earth.
5) I will know the difference between a solar and lunar eclipse.
6) I will understand how to convert large and small numbers into scientific notation and vise versa.
7) I will understand less common distance units, such as; Astronomical unit and Light year.
8) I will be able describe how advances in telescope design led to a better understanding of the universe.
9) I will be able to identify the force that keeps the moon in orbit around Earth.
10) I will know the properties of the planets in terms of; size, distance from the sun, and composition.
11) I will understand how latitude and longitude cause changes in the heating and cooling regionally on Earth.
Exceeding benchmark
To show my ability to exceed the benchmarks I will use; words, drawing, mathematical relationships or other
methods; to further analyze patterns and/ or relationships in the benchmarks.

Unit 2 Review Questions
1. Fill in the blanks. It takes _______day(s) for the Earth to complete one revolution and it takes ____ day(s) for the
Earth to complete one rotation.
2. Fill in the blanks. It takes approximately _______ days for the moon to _______ around the Earth.
3. Draw a diagram of the Earth, Moon, and Sun during a full moon and a half moon.
4. Why does the Earth have seasons?
5. Draw a diagram of a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse. Include the sun, moon, and Earth.
6.Change this number to scientific notation: 5,000.
7. Organize these distances from shortest to longest:
1 light year, 100 miles, 100 kilometers, 1 astronomical unit, 100 astronomical units.
8. Fill in the blanks: Reflecting telescopes use _______________ to collect light and refracting telescopes use
__________________ to bend light.
9. What has more gravity- the Earth or the Moon? Why?
10. If the Earth has a gravitational pull on the moon, why doesn’t the moon crash into the Earth?
11. List the gas planets.
12. When it is summer in Oregon, it is winter in Chile. Why is this so?
