 Trace the development of agricultural techniques that permitted the production of economic
surplus and the emergence of cities as centers of culture and power.
 Understand the relationship between religion and the social and political order in
Mesopotamia and Egypt.
 Know the significance of Hammurabi's Code.
 Trace the evolution of language and its written forms.
Essential Questions:
1. What strategies did Sargon use to conquer the independent city-states of Sumer? What
strategies did he use to control and maintain his empire?
2. Did the Akkadians adopt Sumerian writing and language? Explain.
3. Who was Hammurabi? What was the significance of his code of laws?
4. What was life like in Mesopotamia under Assyrian rule?
5. Hypothesize as to why so much conquest took place in Mesopotamia. Explain your
hypothesis.
