ABDOMINAL NERVES – VENTRAL VIEW – DORSAL ABDOMINAL WALL – LEFT SIDE
FEMORAL NERVE - The origin of the femoral nerve is from the anterior rami of L2
to L4. The femoral nerve emerges from the psoas major just before it passes deep
to the inguinal ligament. It enters the thigh lateral to the femoral artery. It serves
the iliacus and once in the thigh it divides and serves the pectineus as well as the
muscles of the anterior compartment. It gives rise to the saphenous nerve. It also
has sensory function to the skin of the anterior surface of the thigh and via the
saphenous nerve to the medial surface of the leg. In the cat the femoral nerve is
about the size of a number 9 vermicelli.
GENITOFEMORAL NERVE - The genitofemoral nerve is usually found adjacent to
the external iliac artery in the cat. It bifurcates into a genital branch and a femoral
branch. The genital branch in men innervates the cremaster muscle and some
fibers continue on the the superior skin of the scrotum. In females the fibers travel
with the round ligament of the uterus to the inguinal canal and then on to the labium
majus and skin of mons pubis. The femoral branch passes into the femoral sheath
and then innervates the skin on the anterior proximal portion of the thigh. Because
of this, it is sometimes affectionately known to Dr. J's anatomy students as the
"heebeegeebee nerve" because when someone rubs the proximal portion of the
thigh, the person experiences the heebeegeebees. It is recommended that you
inform a person that you are going to do this before performing the experiment,
otherwise you may end up on the late news!

LATERAL CUTANEOUS NERVE - The lateral cutaneous
nerve is usually found close to the deep iliac circumflex artery
on the surface of psoas major. Usually it is the diameter of
dental floss in the cat. It passes through the internal and
external abdominal oblique muscles and innervates the
posterolateral gluteal skin.
LUMBAR NERVE - The medial and lateral lumbar
nerves are branches of the ventral rami of the third
lumbar nerve. They can be found dorsal to the
kidney and lateral to the psoas major muscle.
