AP World History Summer Assignment 2016
Welcome to AP World History. I look forward to a wonderfully engaging school year with you.
Checking out books for this assignment is not recommended or required. The Internet is all you
need. This assignment is especially important. Together, the parts will not only help develop your
historical vocabulary, but they will also improve your familiarity with world geography. Thus, in
completing both parts, you are laying the groundwork for the semester. I believe getting an early
start and taking your time will greatly benefit you. Remember, real learning takes time.
Complete the following parts of the summer assignment by the first day of AP World History class:
Part 1: Vocabulary Chart
Part 2: Mapping Exercise
Purpose: The purpose of the summer reading assignment is to help you – the AP World History
student – get a jumpstart on the curriculum. With 23 chapters and over 6,000 years of history to
cover in roughly 33 weeks, having an already-established foundational knowledge will help you
better manage the accelerated pace of the course.
Expectation: The expectation for the summer assignment is that you will complete it individually. I
recommend you take your time and think deeply about each of the two parts. Both parts are due
the first day of class. Late assignments will not be accepted, as you – along with all of your
classmates – will be assessed on information contained in the assignment during the first week of
classes. Completion of the assignment and the quality of work demonstrated will offer a very clear
picture of the your ability to handle the college-level course load you will experience throughout the
school year.
Assessment: You will take a quiz during the first week of classes on some of the information
contained in the two parts of the AP World History summer assignment.
Part 1: Common World History Vocabulary
Below you will find a chart of vocabulary words that will be repeated over and over during the
course. These words will apply to a variety of cultures throughout history. It is important that you –
to the best of your ability – become familiar with the words and their meanings. Please hand-write
your definitions in complete sentences and, when possible, explain the words as they relate to the
study of world history.
