Session Title: Pandemic Preparation, How to Make Preparedness an Ongoing Activity
Learning Objective: Upon completion of this session attendees will:
 Have a greater understanding of how disease and infections are acquired/transmitted and the
things that make a college campus particularly suited for the spread of infection.
 Be able to articulate best practices in cleaning and disinfection that can help university facility
teams reduce the risk of the spread of infection and how to build those practices into regular
activities.
 Have an understanding of enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocols and the steps that a
campus should be prepared to implement should an outbreak occur.
Target Audience: Leaders and team members within university facility service departments, specifically
those with responsibility for facility cleaning. The topic will also be of interest to those involved or who
work with campus health departments.
Abstract: College campuses present an environment well suited for the spread of infectious disease as
they represent a population living in close proximity with one another. Regardless of whether a
particular disease is spread by air, by direct contact, or by indirect contact, the campus environment
provides many opportunities for disease transmission.
Some may think that Pandemic Preparation is only for organisms like Ebola and Middle East Respiratory
Syndrome (MERS) which have been capturing recent headlines. It does not. It deals with any
transmissible disease including the annual visitor to many campuses, influenza.
This session will begin with an overview of how diseases are transmitted and the particular factors that
facilitate transmission present on a college campus. It will then discuss best practices for cleaning and
disinfection targeted at breaking those paths of transmission. The session will close with suggestions for
which practices should be implemented routinely to prevent an outbreak and which should be
considered for response to an outbreak after it has already occurred.
