Belgium
Belgium is a federal state divided into three regions: Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north,
francophone Wallonia in the south and Brussels,
There is also a small German-speaking minority in the eastern part of the country. Belgium’s
varied landscape includes: 67 kilometers of sea coast and flat coastal plains along the North
Sea, a central plateau and the rolling hills and forests of the Ardennes region in the south
In the coastal region, the climate is mild and humid. There are marked temperature changes
farther inland. In the high south-easterly districts, hot summers alternate with very cold
winters. Except in the highlands, rainfall is seldom heavy.
Brussels is the capital of Belgium
Brussels region is made up of 19 separate communes; the City of Brussels is one of these
communes has about 150,000 inhabitants and dates back to the original city built in the 13th
century. Some fun facts about Brussels include the fact that on last count there are 249
butchers, 874 hairdressers and 647 pharmacies. you will see at least 1 hairdresser and 1 or
2 pharmacies, which are marked by giant neon green cross signs.
Brussels is one of the most international cities in the world. Most of the population is made
up of foreigners, not including those who have taken Belgian citizenship. In following with its
status as the Capital of Europe (the seat of the European Union), Brussels is the location for
40,000 EU employees, 4,000 NATO employees and hosts about 300 permanent
representations: lobby groups, embassies and press corporations
Belgium is the 5th smallest country in the EU – with Belgium covering a total area of
30,528 square kilometres, only Malta, Luxembourg, Cyprus and Slovenia are smaller. It has
three main geographical regions: the coastal plain in the North West which consists mainly
of sand dunes and polders (low-lying land enclosed by dikes); a central plateau with fertile
valleys, moors and heathland; and the forested hills, caves and small gorges of the
Ardennes uplands.
Brussels is a multicultural and international finance centre – home to the European
headquarters of more than 2,000 multi-national organisation
