Project Title
Photoactive self-disinfection bandages towards next generation infection control
Project Description
Infection control in the 21st century is problematic, particularly from the point of view of microbial drug
resistance. Given the problem of increasing antimicrobial drug resistance and the paucity of new
agents, it is sensible to consider alternative approaches to infection control especially towards wound
management. One major problem is infections around open wounds, either through postoperative
surgical procedures or burns/scalds. The bacterial pathogens that primarily infect burns are
methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella
species. In addition to this, burn wounds are commonly infected with a number of fungal species
including Candida albicans.
This project seeks to generate a technology capable of maintaining a clean wound environment,
through touch of the button disinfection (without the need for administration of antibiotics or skin
disinfectants capable of causing pain or irritation), by using light-activated photoantimicrobials.
These are chemicals that absorb light energy and use this to power chemical reactions in their
immediate environment, usually via the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is
microbicidal upon illumination.
