Temple Beth Israel is a Reform
synagogue that traces its founding
to 1859, when 78-member
Congregation Kahal Kadosh Beth
Israel conducted Orthodox services
in German and Hebrew in a rented
room. The congregation completed
its first temple in 1874 and joined the
Reform Union of American Hebrew
Congregations around 1880. By the
turn of the century, the Moorishstyle temple’s location on the main
market street in town became too
noisy for Saturday services and a
new property was purchased. The
first services in the new temple were
held in 1902.
The landmark neoclassical temple
is topped with a central dome,
and the sections of the dome’s
interior radiate from a stained glass
window of the all-seeing eye of God.
Smooth columns with Ionic and
Corinthian elements and additional
stained glass windows provide the
major decorative elements. Brass
chandeliers light parts of the interior;
recently one near the dome and
some previous fixtures lining the ribs
inside the dome were removed in
favor of cove lighting.
The new F305 cove lights replaced a system of exposed
incandescent globe lamps, which had been surfacemounted on each rib of the dome.
Twenty elliptipar Style F305 cove
lights provide interior uplighting for
the dome, positioned on the ledge
at the base of the radiating ribs. The
small fixtures with T5 lamps form
overlapping fields of light to create a
uniform wash. The change in lighting
not only accentuates the details of
the entire dome with glare-free light,
it also makes the dome a source of
reflected light for the temple’s interior.
