WELCOME TO AP WORLD HISTORY
The AP World History course focuses on developing students ‘understanding of the
world history from approximately 8000 BCE to the present. This college-level course has
students investigate the content of world history for significant events, individuals,
developments, and processes in six historical periods, and develop and use the same
thinking skills and methods (analyzing primary and secondary sources, making historical
comparisons, chronological reasoning, and argumentation) employed by historians when
they study the past.
HABITS OF MIND:
The focus in the course will be to expand student’s world history content knowledge with
various learning assignments using technology, readings, lectures, projects (individual
and group), and differentiated instruction to develop vital “Habits of Mind.” These
“Habits of Mind” will increase student’s academic skills. These “Habits of Mind”
include:
1.
Constructing and evaluating arguments
2.
Using documents
3.
Assessing change and continuity
4.
Assessing diversity of interpretations
5.
Seeing global and local patterns
6.
Comparing within and among societies
7.
Assessing claims of universal standards
PERIODIZATION:
The AP World History course is structured around themes and concepts in six
different chronological periods from approximately 800BCE to the present.






Technological and Environmental Transformation ( to c. 600BCE)
Organization and Reorganization of Human Societies (c. 600 BCE to 600 CE)
Regional and Transregional Interactions (c.600CE to 1450)
Global Interactions (c.1450 to c.1750)
Industrialization and Global Integration (c. 1750 to 1900)
Accelerating Global Change and realignments (c.1900 to Present)
LATE WORK:
 Will only be accepted 1 day late for 70% of the student’s earned grade!!!!
(Example- student earned 90% on late work- 70% of 90% is 63%)
 There will be no retaking of test.
ABSENCES: Absences from class whether excused or unexcused will affect student’s
grades.
GRADES:
A = 90 to 100 percent of total points
B = 80 to 89 percent of total points
C = 70-79 percent of total points
D = 60-69percent of total points
F = Less than 60 percent
REQUIRED MATERIALS: It is expected that students will have the following
necessary supplies: 3-ring binder, college rule paper, 5 subject notebook, pens, pencils,
colored markers, and small stapler.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS: Students will be using the internet quite often to
complete various assignments. Although a home connection to the internet is not
required, it will be used very often. Students without a computer at home (or internet
connection) will have to set up a routine after or during school schedule to utilize the
computers in the media center.
POSTINGS/
COMMUNICATIONS: Grades will be posted periodically in class for students to
review, however, should more detailed information be required please use the e-mail
address below.
EMAIL: E-mail is one of the most efficient ways of communicating quickly with me. I
will attempt to answer e-mails within 48 hours. [email protected]
WRITING: This is a writing intensive course, so be prepared to write several essays
a week for the class. You will also have a great deal of reading assignments and you
will be expected to come to class and be ready to discuss all information that has
been assigned. You will have various types of weekly assessments. You will have a
minimum of 2 formal assessments each quarter and 8 informal assessments.
In an effort to make sure that both parent and student know the basic requirements
of this course, I require that parents and students sign this syllabus as proof that its
content is understood.
