Caroline McArthur will give a presentation of products from her new online business

The May Day Trip
The Mid Argyll Cancer Support Group hopes to take a day trip to Arran on May 3rd 2014.
We will travel to Claonaig and catch the ferry to Lochranza. The ferry which leaves at
11.20am is the most convenient for time with the return journey leaving Lochranza at 17.15
The crossing takes 30 minutes each way.
Please let us know if you would like to take this trip. The cost of the mini bus will be paid
from group funds but passengers will have to pay £8.80 for their return fares on the ferry
and provide their own lunch.
Strawberry Tea Party
Our annual Strawberry tea party will take place in the Tayvallich Village Hall on June 21st.
Mary Mclauchlan and Libby MacDonald will host the event with help from friends and
family.
Transport will be arranged from Ardrishaig and Lochgilphead.
The people who attend on the day are asked to bring a donation for Breast Cancer Care
Scotland and if desired a raffle prize.
Last year we raised the fantastic sum of £500 through donations and raffle.
Theatre Trip
The show Dancing in the Rain will be showing in the Theatre Royal, Glasgow in August.
Tickets have been purchased from group funds for the matinee on Wednesday 20th of
August at 2.30pm. Please let Mary Scott or Sheila Cameron know if you wish to attend.
Most of us will go by public transport but it will be up to the individual to make their own
travel and lunch arrangements on the day.
The Official Opening of the new Chemotherapy Unit
Sheila Cameron and Mary Scott represented the Mid Argyll Cancer Support group at the
Official Opening of The Macmillan Day Suite and The Dunadd Room at the Mid Argyll
Community Hospital and Integrated Care Centre on Monday the 9th of December 2013.
Assembled guests were greeted and addressed by invited and local speakers.
The guests were then invited to the Macmillan Day Suite for the opening ceremony which
was performed jointly by Michael Russel MSP and Mr Kevin Williams, one of the first people
to receive chemotherapy at the unit.
There are facilities for up to three patients to receive treatment in the unit.
Due to the kind donations from the local public and Macmillan Cancer Support the new
purpose built Macmillan Day suite will provide a designated area for patients to receive
chemotherapy and other supportive treatments as prescribed for their care.
The Dunadd Room is a room which may be used for relatives of inpatients approaching end
of life. The room provides a quiet area or overnight accommodation to allow them to be
near their loved ones at this time.
Both areas will be used to support people living with cancer and with palliative needs.
It means that for certain cancers, chemotherapy treatment may be given at our local
hospital thus making for less distress and discomfort caused by long return journeys to
Glasgow or Oban.
Cancers In Men
Testicular Cancer is sadly on the increase, more than double the number diagnosed than
20 years ago. Yet is one of the most treatable cancers with a success rate of 95% if caught
early enough.
The problem is that too many men ignore the signs or don’t know what to look for.
Like breast checks a monthly check of the testicles is important and there is a
recommended routine.
Do the check after a shower when the skin is warm and relaxed.
Take the pouch of skin containing the testicles in the palm of your hands.
Use the fingers and thumb to gently press on and around each testicle.
It is normal for testicles to differ in size slightly or for one to hang lower than the other.
You’re looking for lumps or bumps or anything unusual. Not all lumps are caused by cancer
but it is important to get them checked out if you are worried.
Prostate Cancer-The signs and symptoms.
Most men with early prostate cancer have no symptoms at all but some men have some of
the following symptoms;
Needing to urinate more especially at night.
Having difficulty starting or taking a long time to finish urinating.
Having a weak flow when you go or a feeling that your bladder has not emptied properly.
Needing to rush to the toilet with maybe having leakage before you get there.
Dribbling urine.
Pain when urinating.
Blood in your urine or semen.
Other possible symptoms include pain in the back, hips or pelvis that was not there before.
These other symptoms could be caused by general aches and pains or other conditions like
arthritis.
It is still a good idea to get them checked out by your GP.
Things that may affect your risk of getting Prostate cancer.
Age: Prostate cancer mainly affects men over 50, and your risk increases with age.
Ethnicity: In the UK, African Caribbean men are three times more likely to develop prostate
cancer than white men of the same age.
Family: you are two and a half times more likely to get prostate cancer if your father or
brother has been diagnosed with it, compared with a man who has no relatives with
prostate cancer.
If you are worried about any of the symptoms listed above you might want to get further
advice or a check up at your GP surgery.
