CURRENT STUDENT PROJECTS Momba MNB, ( Kamika Ilunga, Mankazana) Role of protozoan in the bioremediation of polluted wastewater systems 2008current Abstract Studies on the interaction between heavy metals and ciliated protozoa are scarce, especially when compared with the available data from other microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi. However, knowledge of the roles of protozoa in heavy metal removal will help in an effective biological wastewater treatment, since the reduction of heavy metals to the lowest possible level is known to be vital to the maintenance of unpolluted water supplies. Hence the present study intends to investigate heavy metal removal efficiency of some selected wastewater protozoa isolates. The effect of the isolates on some of the water quality parameters (such as chemical oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, pH and temperature) will also be investigated. Momba MNB (KhaboMmekoa CM) Health impact of waterborne pathogens in rural domestic water on HIV/AID infected individuals in KZN Province Abstract HIV/AIDS and water-borne diseases are regarded as the scourges of the century, decimating the population of the world, but particular the rural population, where there is generally a lack of basic facilities and the community suffers from profound austerity conundrum. Mitigating the impact of these diseases is therefore a touchstone to which scientists must return in order to address the intricate linkages between HIV/AIDS and water quality. This is the main focus of the present investigation. 2008current
