2016 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Valley Health’s regional cancer treatment facility at Winchester Medical Center opened for patients on
August 29, 2016. The new 52,000 square foot center offers expanded treatment space for medical,
surgical and radiation oncology. This state of the art facility offers an infusion center overlooking the lake,
easy access to the Diagnostic Center via an enclosed skywalk and a Trex healing garden.
EDUCATION, PREVENTION AND EARLY DETECTION
 On-site genetic counseling now available at Winchester Medical Center
 September Grand Rounds conferences focused on oncology topics
 Community skin cancer screening event in May during Skin Cancer Awareness Month
 Evening educational programs on lung cancer for providers and community
 Cancer Program Resource Liaison Program recognized at national oncology conference
TREATMENT
 Two new Varian TrueBeam™ linear accelerators
 Da Vinci® Xi™ surgical robotics system will enhance minimally invasive surgery and further
support expanding cancer services
 Growth of minimally invasive thoracic surgical program
 Lung cancer tumor board developed
 Expanded days for gynecologic surgical oncology services
 Aria – EMR for radiation oncology patients
 Equicare patient portal – comprehensive approach to care coordination, patient access begins
early 2017
 Eclipse – enhanced radiation oncology treatment planning system
 Cryoablation for renal tumors
DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES
Valley Health added Digital breast tomosynthesis (3D mammography) at the Diagnostic Center in
Winchester, giving referring physicians the option to order a comprehensive breast cancer screening
evaluation for their patients.
SURVIVORSHIP SERVICES
 Wellspring celebrated 10 years of supporting Valley Health’s cancer patients and their families
 Board certified specialist in oncology nutrition now available full time
 Lung patient navigator position filled
 Integrative Care suite inside Cancer Center with convenient access to free Reiki sessions,
Expressive Arts class, aromatherapy workshops and meditation room for mind, body and soul
 American Cancer Society Look Good Feel Better Program offered at Winchester Medical Center
RESEARCH
Shenandoah Oncology, PC, conducts medical oncology clinical trials as an active member of the US
Oncology research network and a clinical affiliate of VCU Massey Cancer Center. Patients have access to
large cooperative group trials locally.
ACCREDITATION
Winchester Medical Center’s Cancer Program was accredited by the American College of Surgeons
Commission on Cancer in April.
