Chapter 11: The Endocrine System (pp. 276) Overview The endocrine system, like the nervous system, controls body activities to maintain a relatively constant internal environment. The methods used by these two systems are different. This chapter describes the location of the endocrine glands and the hormones they secrete. It Explains the nature of hormones, the substances that function as hormones, how hormones affect target tissues, how the secretion of hormones is controlled by a negative feedback system and the nervous system, the general function of each hormone, and the result of too little or too much of each hormone. Knowledge of the function of the endocrine system is basic to understanding how metabolic processes are regulated to meet the changing needs of the body. Learning Objectives: After studying this chapter and completing the review exercises, you should be able to: 1. Define “endocrine glands” and “hormones”. 2. Name the endocrine glands and their hormones. 3. Understand the function of these hormones in the body. 4. Pronounce, define, and write medical terms related to the endocrine system. 5. Describe common diseases related to the endocrine system. PROJECTS A. Endocrine System Gland Booklet: (100 project points) Each student will create a book illustrating the major glands of the endocrine system. The booklet should include the following diagrams in order. Each drawing should be colored, labeled, and include the page #, Figure # title, and description. Include a cover page with your name, period, and date due. 1. Figure 11.2 p. 278 Locations of the major endocrine glands. 2. Figure 11.7 p. 283 The pituitary gland 3. Figure 11.10 p. 287 Thyroid gland 4. Figure 11.11 p.288 The parathyroid gland 5. Medical Terminology (warm-ups) Notes/ Disorders. This will be a written exam, NOT an open notebook test. You will need to STUDY for this test
