Buddhism and Hinduism
A description of the two most influential and practiced religions in
all of India. Why over 1300 million people follow these religions
throughout their lives and a summary of their beliefs, goals and
sacred texts.
Buddhism
Buddhism is practiced widely
throughout the world and has
about 350 million followers.
The founder of Buddhism,
Siddhartha Gautama, was
born to a local king or noble in
the Himalayan foothills
historians say and was later
know as the “Enlightened
One.” It is based on The Four
Noble Truths and the
Eightfold Path while the
ultimate goal is to achieve
supreme peace, or Nirvana.
Hinduism
Hinduism can be traced back to
before 1500 B. C., as old texts
such as the Vedas are dated
around that time. Many people
think believe it is the oldest
religion but some people even
use it just as a series of customs
or beliefs. The Brahman is the
highest being spiritually. All
people gather good karma
throughout their life and attempt
to reach this Supreme Being. In
order to reach his, they must
follow one of the three paths to
reach this salvation or release.

Hinduism
The beliefs of Buddhism are based on The
Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path.
The Four Noble Truths are suffering
exists, suffering arises from attachment to
desire, suffering ceases when attachment
to desire ceases, and freedom from
suffering is possible by practicing the
Eightfold Path. This Eightfold Path is
consisted of the right understanding, the
right intent, the right speech, the right
action, the right livelihood, the right effort,
the right mindfulness, and lastly the right
concentration. The main goal of
Buddhism is to have positive karma. They
believe everything you do creates karma
whether it is positive or negative, and that
your next birth is decided largely on the
karma you collected in your previous life.
There is also a cycle called “samsara: that
people go through which consists of death,
rebirth, ignorance and suffering. In order
to liberate themselves from this, people
must have enough good karma to reach
supreme peace or nirvana. Lastly
Buddhism uses the sacred texts that
Buddha’s followers made by collecting
and recording Buddha’s teachings into a
text called Tripitaka.
Hinduism is over 3,500 years old and a very
complex religion. The main gods are
Brahma, the Creator, Vishnu, the Preserver,
and Shiva, the Destroyer. There are
however many different gods that take
many different forms such as humans or
animals and each of the gods above have
many different forms as well. If you practice
Hinduism, the goal of life is to achieve
maksha, or union with Brahman. However,
on your way to this, you must reach atman,
which is another way of saying Brahman,
which means your essential self. If you
cannot reach maoksha in one life, then you
will get as many chances as you need, as
Hindus believe in reincarnation. In order to
be born into the circle of life into a better
position than last time, you must have good
dharma, which is the religious and moral
duties of an individual, and good karma,
which refers to all the actions in a person’s
life that affect their fate in the next life.
Also, key morals such as ahisma or
nonviolence must be followed throughout
life. Lastly, Hindu texts such as the Vedas,
Upanishads, and Bagavad Gita are used to
teach lessons and reinforce ideas.
