Origins of Buddhism: INDIA – by 600 B.C.
there were growing signs of dissatisfaction
with the rigidity of the caste system and the
great power wielded by the Brahmins.
I.
Siddhartha Guatama –
founder of Buddhism
(also known as Buddha)
1. The story of the origins of
Buddhism:
III. The Four Noble Truths – the core of
Buddha’s teachings.
1. Sufferings is a part of
existence.
-Existence means pain
and sorrow.
2.
The origins of suffering come from
desire – human misery stems from
their constant yearning and desire
for the temporary pleasures of this
world.
-Problem – People become attached to
things they must sooner or later
lose.
- People want
things they
can never
have.
3. The way to end all
suffering is to rid
yourself of all
desire.
4. You must follow the Eightfold Path to
rid yourself of desire. – The way to
overcome such desires and attain
enlightenment is to follow the
Eightfold Path, which is called the
Middle Way between desires and
self-denial.
a.
Eightfold Path:
* right faith
* right resolve
* right speech
* right action
* right living
* right effort
* right thought
* right meditation
b. Ahisma – follow a policy of total nonviolence
IV. Buddhist Holy Text: Tripitaka – earliest
collection of Buddhist teachings.
1. Called The Three
Baskets because it
written on long, narrow
leaves, which were
sewn at the edges then
grouped into bunches
and stored in baskets.
It is also called
the Pali Canon,
after the
language in
which it was first
written
2.
3. The English translation has more than 40
volumes.
V. Ultimate Goal: Buddha believed the
attainment of perfect peace was not
easy, that people would have to
experience numerous rebirths before
their inner desires were overcome.
1. Not all people would achieve
victory over self.
2. However, those who succeeded
would attain nirvana.
a. Nirvana – the state
of freedom from
the cycle of
rebirth
