NOT REQUIRED, BUT PIs SHOULD FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES IN OSHA’S STANDARD
ON TOXIC AND HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES: FORMALDEHYDE.

2. Describe the predicted effects of the chemical / toxin / hazardous drug on the animal, i.e. toxicity
to animal.
Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen and exhibits acute toxicity. In animals, it is used to
quickly fix tissues to best preserve physiological characteristics for future analysis. It is most
commonly used post-euthanasia, after tissue harvesting, but can be used, as in this protocol, for
perfusion through tissues of a deeply anesthetized animal. The process of perfusion requires all
blood is removed from the body, which is inconsistent with life and therefore the live animal will
not experience any carcinogenic or toxic effects of formaldehyde administration.
