Curriculum
Conduct a thorough review of all
baccalaureate degree programs in
Theatre in response to the
Program Review.
New Program and
Courses submitted
through CCR process
BA Curriculum review completed and
CCR’s submitted in the fall. BA approved
and in place for fall of 2009.
BFA in Music Theatre, Acting and Design
and Technology developed in spring
2008. BFA in Music Theatre CCR
submitted in summer 2008.
• BA in Theatre – Program
introduced is a balanced liberal
arts degree that includes
performance, design/technology,
and research.
• BFA Music Theatre – In
development.
Theatre Capstone
Project
Redesign the capstone project and
performance reviews for all
graduating seniors by May 2006,
and bring them in line with
accreditation needs.
Course outcome from
spring 2008
Theatre Lab and Class
Work
Balance course work and
production.
Student attendance
during productions
Senior Showcase parameters too
loose. Need more definition and
stronger parameters. Courses
have been combined from a fall
and spring to one course in the
spring.
Student progress in the classroom
and in productions.
Theatre Assessment
Develop annual assessment
procedures and learning outcomes
specific to the discipline that are
not based on the final grade
received in the class.
Develop a department student
handbook that includes all the new
policies and procedures.
Student Audition/Interview
Develop a workload policy that
takes into account production
assignment equivalencies, contact
hours and faculty and staff work
differences.
Faculty workload
consistent with NAST
standards
Senior showcase continues to not meet
the needs of the students and the
department. Based on the work
presented in the spring of 2008 and 2007
the project will be modified again in the
spring of 2009.
Attendance far superior during production
than in the past. Students understand
that course work comes first and that
productions are an extension of the work
in the classroom. Faculty and Director
priorities work together. This goal has
been met.
Assessment materials tied more to
Department Learning Outcomes. Still
need to work to integrate course work
with department assessment
audition/interview.
Departmental policies to give students an
understanding of the departments’
expectations of what their responsibilities
are for any given production. This
handbook should also impact the
professional climate that we are all trying
to achieve. This goal is in progress.
In progress. Data has been gathered
from NAST and like programs but has not
been implemented.

Theatre Productions
Establish Season Ticket system
and reserved seating for
departmental productions.
Audience numbers
Audience numbers from the on campus
community are steadily increasing.
Audience numbers from the community
are also increasing but not at the same
rate. Season tickets can provide a better
method for estimating ticket income.
Student Recruitment
Develop strategic plan for
recruitment and growth of
department.
Student numbers
Facilities Improvement
Develop teaching space specific to
Theatre disciplines.
Teaching success
Development
Theatre Scholarship program
Improve ability to recruit
top students in state and
region
Faculty recruited at state and regional
theatre conferences this last academic
year. Registration is up 300% from last
year. Growth is right on track with the
five-year plan for the department. If the
numbers go up the same amount next
year the department may need to change
to an audition only program.
Currently none of the performance or
design curriculum is delivered in a space
specific to their discipline. Acting courses
need to be delivered in a rehearsal hall, a
large space that has enough room to
work with a large cast. Scenic and
Costume design need a classroom with
facilities for drawing and painting and
Lighting needs a light lab for students to
use to present class projects.
Currently the Theatre department has 3
freshman talent scholarships. To help
supplement these scholarships the
department needs 15 $500 scholarships
to help recruit students to UWF. The
department needs to develop a fund that
can handle $30,000 of scholarship
money that would be needed once this
program was up and running.

Box office revenue accounts for
approximately 25% of production
costs. Productions are the lab for
theatre classes. It is important that
the department provide students
with an appropriate amount of work
that challenges and expands their
understanding of the technology.
Student enrollment at consistent
levels. Improves student numbers
in courses which in turn improves
the courses.
Student success and
understanding of the material.
Building the quality of the students

Describe the direct measure used to assess student learning in this domain (e.g., answers to questions included on
an exam, performance on a paper or project scored with a rubric, etc.)
Students attended an assessment Audition/Interview specific to their area of concentration. There are specific
measurements that the faculty use to determine the progress of each student in the area of Critical Thinking.
If you observed changes in student performance on this measure when comparing the two years, briefly describe (in
one or two sentences) the nature of these changes.
This is the third year of conducting this type of assessment. Refinements of the rubric were made this year based on
the outcomes of last year’s assessment. The data indicates that the students performed marginally better than they
did in the previous year but with the improved rubric it may actually be stronger than the numbers indicate.
Use of Assessment Data for Making Decisions. Describe the process used in your department to evaluate
assessment evidence and make decisions (include dates of relevant department meetings if known). Describe the
decisions made to improve student learning in your program. Describe how these decisions are related to the
assessment evidence collected by your department.
The faculty meets to discuss the assessments immediately following the process. A general sense of the process is
gathered at that time. Assessment data is discussed again when preparing for the coming year’s assessment
auditions. Currently we are exploring the integration of specific data from courses in the curriculum.
In addition to the data the faculty get from the audition and interview the student turn in a narrative that also identifies
some of the concerns the students have about the program. These issues are very valuable for getting a sense of
the student’s perspective of the department.
Use of Assessment Data for Improvement of Assessment Procedures. Describe any changes made to
assessment methods. Explain the relation between these changes and the information obtained from previous
assessments.
It is difficult to point to any one change in the department that was based solely on assessment. The department is
currently experiencing change on many levels, such as curriculum and faculty. New curriculum has been introduced
this year and more will be introduced this next year. The major change in the assessment process this year was a
clearer definition of the rubric used in the assessment process. This change helped improve the data and added
another layer of rigor to the program.

Students attended an assessment Audition/Interview specific to their area of concentration. There are 3 specific
measurements that the faculty uses to determine the progress of each student in the area of Project Management.
If you observed changes in student performance on this measure when comparing the two years, briefly describe (in
one or two sentences) the nature of these changes.
As with the previous domain, the rubric for the project management was refined for this year’s assessment. Student
scores were consistently higher in this area. From the data it appears that the students have a better sense of the
departments expectations in this area.
Use of Assessment Data for Making Decisions. Describe the process used in your department to evaluate
assessment evidence and make decisions (include dates of relevant department meetings if known). Describe the
decisions made to improve student learning in your program. Describe how these decisions are related to the

Describe the Department’s Commitment to Assessment Activities in 2008-2009
Domain(s) to be examined in assessment plan in 2008-2009
The assessment audition/interview gives the department a good snap shot of the students progress from year to
year. The priorities for this part of the assessment are to continue to improve the rubric used so that there is more
consistency in the data.
With the addition of data from specific courses the department can get an idea of how students are progressing in the
area of Content. This will give us a more complete picture of the students progress and is not a measurement that
can be made during the assessment audition/interview.
Assessment question(s) to be addressed in 2008-2009
Addition of data from specific courses.

Describe the direct measure used to assess student learning in this domain (e.g., answers to questions included on

The first three outcomes were assessed from questions on the final exam. The production evaluations come from
critiques students write when they see a production.

Assessment question(s) to be addressed in 2008-2009
Need to improve assessment data to be more general and less specific to that course that semester. Data needs to
cover material important to majors as well as non-majors. Theatre vocabulary would be another area to assess.
