Notifiable Diseases
Purpose of Policy:
The nursery has a responsibility to ensure the health and safety of all children.
Policy:
The list given below are diseases notifiable (to Local Authority Proper Officers) under the Health
Protection (Notification) Regulations 2010:

Acute encephalitis

Malaria

Acute infectious hepatitis

Measles

Acute meningitis

Meningococcal septicaemia

Acute poliomyelitis

Mumps

Anthrax

Plague

Botulism

Rabies

Brucellosis

Rubella

Cholera

SARS

Diphtheria

Scarlet fever

Enteric fever (typhoid or paratyphoid fever)

Smallpox

Food poisoning

Tetanus

Haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS)

Tuberculosis

Infectious bloody diarrhoea

Typhus

Invasive group A streptococcal disease

Viral haemorrhagic fever (VHF)

Legionnaires’ Disease

Whooping cough

Leprosy

Yellow fever
If there is a case of any of the above illnesses, the local Health Protection Agency must be informed
as soon as reasonably possible:

Out of Hours Advice

To contact a public health professional in an emergency out of hours; in the evenings, at weekends
or during bank holidays, please phone: 0844 9670082

Ofsted must also be informed as soon as reasonably possible and within 14 days on: 0300 123 1231

If there is a case of any of the above illnesses a letter will also go out to parents informing them
that a child has been diagnosed with the illness. Information on signs and symptoms and
information will also be provided in the letter.

The identity of the child who has fallen ill must not be disclosed and will remain anonymous.
For details of exclusion periods, please refer to the ‘Sickness and Absence’ policy.
