CHS365: Scholarly Journal Abstract Guidelines
(5 Points-, Late Papers Docked a Grade)
Give yourself enough time to check this in Turnitin.com
(Refer to Library Homepage for MLA Format/Library Assistance)
(Submit and click “ORIGINALITY SCORE”) Use your discretion; you may need to revise. It is your tool to
check; resubmit if needed.
The abstract should be approximately two+ pages long, typed, double spaced, .12 font. Use “spellcheck,” etc. and complete sentences. Paraphrase rather than copy word for word and use quotes
sparingly. No more than one short quote per page. Some scholarly journal articles have a one
paragraph abstract at the beginning that briefly summarizes the article, but your abstract will be longer.
You may use this information in your Research Paper.
Locate a scholarly journal article about Chicanas or any other women of color in the U.S. or in another
country. If the article relates to your Mini-Research paper, you can use it as a source.
This assignment will help you figure out how to find a scholarly journal article and the availability of
scholarly journal articles on 3rd world women.
Confirm that the article is about 3rd world women in the U.S. or in another country. Confirm that it is a
scholarly journal by locating a list of references at the end of the article or looking only at peer reviewed
journals. Check with me or a librarian if you are unsure. A scholarly journal publishes articles by experts
in the field—for example, anthropologists, political scientists, sociologists, psychologists, etc. It usually
includes original research on a topic.
Read the article and identify the main parts. Use the Sub-headings below so I can see that you
addressed each point:
 Citation information in MLA Form: Type at top of Abstract. For proper form, see handouts from
Library session.
 The Problem: What is the event, issue, person, concept being studied? What is the research
question, if the author states it?
 Briefly describe the significance of the study if the author provides it. Why is it important?
 The Research Method: How did the author gather information (questionnaires, surveys,
observations, historical documents, interviews, official documents, census data or other large
data bases? Other?
 Who and/or How many people were surveyed or interviewed or studied in some way? Describe
the Research Method.
 The Findings: What did the author find out? Summarize the main findings, answer to the
question, or conclusions the author provides. Any surprises?
 Brief Commentary: Relate the article to one of our readings (Enloe, Maria Teresa Tula, Mascia
Lees). Does it confirm, contradict, complement by adding information to one of our readings or
films? It could relate to a general theme rather than a specific organization or person. Do you
have any criticisms of the article in regard to the research methods or findings? Explain in a well
developed paragraph—not simply its about women and activism—go into detail and cite the page
number and other related reading.
