InhonoroftheInternationalUnionfortheConservationofNature(IUCN)WorldConservation
CongresstobeheldinHonolulu,Hawai‘i,inSeptember2016,theHawaiianAirlinesFoundation,the
Hawai‘iConservationAllianceFoundation,andConservationInternationalinviteproposalsfrom
Hawaii-basednon-profitorganizationsforcommunity-basedprojectsinclimatechangemitigation,
adaptation,andeducation.Awardsareexpectedtobeintherangeof$5,000-15,000,andapplications
areduebyNovember1,2016viaemailto:[email protected].
ProgramDescription
Currentgreenhousegasemissiontrendsputtheworldoncoursefora3.7-4.8°Ctemperatureincrease
by2100,whichwouldresultincatastrophicimpacts.Evenwiththecommitmentsmadeunderthenew
ParisAgreement,mitigationeffortsfallshortofthecutsrequiredtolimitwarmingtoarelativelysafe
1.5°Cor2°C.Further,evenifallemissionsarestoppedimmediately,impactswillcontinueformany
centuriesduetothecumulativeimpactofemissions.Already,estimatessuggestthatnearly800million
peoplegloballyarevulnerabletotheimpactsofclimatechange.
Addressingthethreatsofclimatechangewillbeacentralthemeduringthegatheringofworldleaders
attheIUCNWorldConservationCongressinHonolulu,Hawai‘i,thisSeptember2016.Itisbroadly
recognizedthatinorderforactiontobeeffective,effortsmustaddressrootcausesofclimatechange
(mitigation)andalsoassistvulnerablepopulationsbuildresiliencetoitsimpacts(adaptation)bothof
whichareessentialtosafeguardenvironments,species,andecosystemsforthebenefitofhuman
wellbeing.Asanislandstate,Hawaiiisparticularlyvulnerabletotheimpactsofclimatechangethreats,
includingincreasedstorms,coastalinundation,sealevelrise,coralbleaching,andotherimpacts.
Toheightenawarenessof,andpromotetakingactiontoaddresstheimpactsofclimatechangein
Hawai‘i,theHawaiianAirlinesFoundation,theHawai‘iConservationAllianceFoundation,and
ConservationInternationalhavepartneredtodevelopanIUCNWorldConservationCongressHawai‘i
ClimateFund.TheFundpartnersinviteproposalsfromHawai‘i-basednon-profitorganizations
engagedinclimatechangemitigation,adaptation,andeducationwork.Thisfundwillsupport
projectsthatfocusoncommunity-basedinitiativestoaddresstherootcausesofclimatechange,and
promotethedevelopmentofamoreresilientsocietytoadapttotheimpactsofclimatechange.Funds
maybeusedtosupportcomponentsorexpansionofexistingprojectsorprograms.
Projectproposalsmustaddressoneormoreofthefollowingprogramgoals:
1. Implementnature-basedsolutionstomitigateclimatechangeimpactsthroughcommunitybasedrestorationinitiativesthatcaptureandsequestercarbon,AND/OR
2. Aidvulnerablepopulationsinadaptingtotheimpactsofclimatechange.Thismayinclude
outreachandeducationprojectsdesignedtodrivebehavioralchangesbyprovidingsciencebasedinformationaboutthethreatsposedbyclimatechange,and,specificactionsHawai`i
residentscanundertaketoadapttoandmitigatetheimpactsofclimatechange.

1. Applicantname,includingorganizationname,projectmanagerorprincipalinvestigator,and
contactinformation
2. Missionandgeneraldescription/purposeofthegroupororganization(includemission,vision,
pastandongoingprojects).
3. Projectlocation,includinggeographicalboundariesoftargetarea/community/ahupua‘a(you
mayincludeanattachedmap).
4. Aprojectdescriptionoftheproposedinitiativeincluding:(a)goalsoftheprojectandspecific
RFPgoalsaddressed;(b)methodologies/approach;(c)projectstaff;(d)workplanincluding
projectmilestonesanddeliverables;(e)expectedoutcomesandmetricsofsuccessforproject
evaluation
5. Projectbudgetandbudgetjustification(descriptionofhowfundswillbeused).Pleaseinclude
descriptionofanymatchingfundsincludingin-kindmatch.

Budget
TheaveragegrantfromtheIUCNWCCHawaiiClimateFundwillbe$10,000,howevereachproposal
andbudgetwillbeevaluatedbasedoncommunity/organizationneedandjustificationforthebudget
relatingtotheproposedactivities.Grantawardsmaybehigherorlower,dependingonprojectscope
andneed.
MatchingFunds
Matchingfunds(includingin-kinddonationsandvolunteerhours)areencouragedbutnotrequired.If
suchsupportisreceived,pleaseincludenameofexternalfunderanddescribewhatresourcesorstaff
timetheywillsupportinthebudgettemplateandfinalreports.
Reporting&EvaluationRequirements
Uponsuccessfulawardofagrant,projectapplicantswillberequiredtosubmitafinalreportaswellas
asummaryfinancialreport,whichisduebeforethefinal10%portionoffundsisreleased.Atemplate
willbeprovided.IUCNWCCHawaiiClimateFundpartnersencourageapplicantstoincludediscussion
intheirproposalsabouthowtheywillobjectivelyevaluatethesuccessoftheprojectandprovide
lessonslearnedtohelpimprovetheprogram,aswellasbuildonthesuccessesforfutureworkinthis
area.Quantitativemetrics(e.g.,tonnesofcarbonsequestered;#sofprogramparticipantseducated,
reached;#sofcommunitymembersaffectedbyadaptationinitiatives)areencouraged,aswell
qualitativeinformationonlessonslearned.

ProposalEvaluation
Proposalswillbeevaluatedbasedonthefollowingcriteria:
• Howwellactivitiesandoutcomesmeetstatedprojectgoals;
• Potentialformeasurablereductionofclimate-changeimpacttocommunitiesinHawai`i
throughsequestrationofcarbon,mitigationofanticipatedorexistingimpacts,and/or
implementationofproven-effectiveadaptationmeasures;
• Foreducationandoutreachprojects,theextenttowhichtheprojectisexpectedtodrive
specificbehavioralchangesinthepublicortargetaudience;
• Overalleffectivenessandefficiency;and
• Scopeofcommunityimpact(e.g.howmanypeoplewilltheprojecthelpadapt/mitigate).
