Subject-Verb Study Sheet
I.
II.
Verbs
1. Know the be, do, have and others verb groups !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
2. A single verb can be one to four words long.
Examples
That football player is huge.
He was walking down the hall.
Our class will be writing about him.
We should have been done by now.
***In verb phrases (2-, 3-, or 4- word verbs) all words in the phrase, except the
last word, must be from the verb groups.
3. Verb phrases can be separated in sentences.
- The words not and never are never part of the verb.
(Ex. – The new student could not find the art room.)
- Many times a question will have a verb phrase split by the subject.
(Ex.- Will you help me with my homework?)
Simple Subjects
1. Simple subjects are usually single words, unless they are proper nouns
(capitalized)
Ex.- The new student in my class is very diligent.
Captain Martin Smith addressed the class.
2. Simple subjects will not be in prepositional phrases. Learn to recognize some
common prepositions (of, to, with, from, for, at, in, by). A prepositional phrase
starts with a preposition and ends with a noun/pronoun after it which completes
the phrase.
Ex.- A group of five students helped organize the assembly.
Three Step Process to Finding Subjects and Verbs
1. Look for any be, do, have, or others verb group words.
2. Look for any action words. (Key endings: -ed, -en, -ing)
3. Insert the verb into this question: Who or what (verb) ?
STUDY Hint: Review your notes each day/night!
