Teacher: D. Luce Subject: Geometry Grade Level: 9-12 5-E Model Lesson – September 1, 2009 Objectives: Content SWBAT identify adjacent, vertical, linear, and supplementary angles. SWBAT Find measures of pairs of angles. TEKS: G.1A, G.2B TAKS: 2, 4, 9, and 10 Language SWBAT discuss how to determine whether two pairs of angles are complementary, supplementary, or neither. Vocabulary: Content Specific Adjacent, linear pair, complementary angles, supplementary angles, vertical angles Note: Vocabulary will be taught/reviewed directly Materials: Related Angle, right angle, straight angle, vertical, linear, pair Dry Erase Markers and sleeves, Patty Paper, protractors, Class set of Patty Paper Investigation sheets , Class set of Draw What I Say Cards, copies of 1-4 Practice B Activities: Warm-Up Algebra Problems related to angle problems, suggestions: SW work one TAKS question and 2 problems from previous night's homework on Blackboard. ENGAGE Hook: Play Hangman for the phrase “Adjacent Angles”. Offer a winning incentive such as class wins only 6 homework problems that you pick, teacher wins 10 homework problems students pick, After 8-10 misses they lose, allow only one guess at answer to keep the game going TW choose students to call out letters, selecting quieter, more withdrawn, inattentive students, SW call out letters, final student makes the guess TW Question students about meaning/definition/examples of Adjacent Angles and call on individual students SW Students will provide possible definitions and illustrate examples on the board TW question students about meaning of Non adjacent Angles SW provide possible definitions and illustrate example TW Verify correct definitions EXPLORE SW use patty paper and protractors to discover the relationships for adjacent angles/ linear pairs and vertical angles (Patty Paper Geometry Guided Investigations 1.3 and 1.4. EXPLAIN TW ask students what they discovered using the patty paper. TW present notes on adjacent angles, linear pairs, vertical angles, complementary angles, and supplementary angles. Help students remember that complementary angles add up to 90 and supplementary angles add up to 180. C comes before S in alphabet and 90 comes before 180 on the number line. SW complete graphic organizer illustrating angle pairs. TW work examples 1, 2 3 , and 5 with students. Guiding Questions: What type of angle is formed by a pair of adjacent angles that form a linear pair? (example 1) Do 2 angles have to be adjacent to be complementary or supplementary? (example 2 & 3) Can vertical angles have a common side or common interior points? (example 5) SW work example problems in notes using Cornell Note Format. ELABORATE SW work with a partner to Draw what I say (Cooperative Learning & Geometry Blackline - 1.2.9) EVALUATE SW work guided practice problems on white board. SW work Holt Practice 1.3 B for Homework problems depending on results of hangman game. WICR Strategies are used throughout the lesson.
