Exterior angles of polygons
Note:
A polygon is a closed figure that consists of line segments that meet only at their endpoints, called
vertices, and that do not cross elsewhere.
An exterior angle of a polygon is an angle supplementary to an interior angle of a polygon (an interior
angle is the angle formed by two adjacent sides of a polygon that occupies the region inside of the
polygon).
Questions:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Find the sum of measures of the exterior angles in an equilateral triangle.
Find the sum of measures of the exterior angles in a scalene triangle of your choice.
Find the sum of measures of the exterior angles in a square.
Find the sum of measures of the exterior angles in a general quadrilateral of your choice.
Stop. Reflect.
5. Can you prove the formula for the sum of the exterior angles of any polygon? This question is
not easy. Use the fact that the sum of an interior and exterior angle at a vertex is 180 degrees.
