POSITION SUMMARY: The Marriage and Family Therapist will provide services to diagnose and treat for
mental and emotional disorders, whether cognitive, affective or behavioral, within the context of interpersonal
relationships, including, without limitation, marital and family systems, and the application or use of
psychotherapy, counseling, evaluation, consultation, treatment planning, supervision, research and prevention of
mental and emotional disorders to a person, couple, family or family group or other group of persons served by
the Reno-Sparks Tribal Health Center.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
 Provide individual, group, marriage, couples, and family therapy and consultative services to clients,
their families and support network resolving areas of individual, family and marriage dysfunction;
counseling and guiding clients in their relationships with their families; counseling children and
adolescents in differentiating their roles and expectations in the family system; assisting children and
adolescents to understand their illness and developing ways to successfully manage their fears, anger,
depression, anxiety or any other emotions, all as they relate to the client’s nuclear and/or extended
family system;
 Provide crisis intervention or appropriate behavioral and environmental controls for clients who may be
hostile, suicidal, combative, aggressive or assaultive, follow established protocols and policy to protect
clients, staff, family, and others potentially at risk due to client behavior or family dynamics;
 Develop and provide treatment plans by working with an individual and their families and significant
others by utilizing a family and community systems approach that will be affective in resolving
problems to prevent reoccurrence and for reunification for families;
 Provide individual, family, and groups counseling and consultative services to clients, their families and
support systems utilizing a variety of intervention techniques required to effectively address client
problems, which may include multiple psychosocial problems within the family unit;

Prepare and submit documentation and reports to court regarding client’s mental and behavioral status,
research client records, make observations and recommendations through integration of treatment team
input to conclude an appropriate level of treatment
Review client charts, make case presentations and discuss client treatment during weekly case staffing;
integrate and analyze information from available sources and systems; document quality of care and
ensure information is available to other members of the treatment team;
Complete required forms and reports and maintain documentation to ensure compliance with established
laws, regulations, policies and requirements for agency reimbursement in the Electronic Health Record,
i.e., NextGen, RPMS, clinical software program;
Provide therapy in the areas of career counseling, anger management, domestic violence, trauma, sexual
abuse, play therapy, art therapy, marital therapy, cultural conflict, and family therapy.
Demonstrates knowledge and experience in family systems theory as evidenced by improved
client/family outcomes; enhances client change through participation in various therapeutic groups;
Ensures client confidentiality is maintained with all employees;
Available to work flexible work schedule as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
 A Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, psychology, social work or in
the specific area of training and licensing discipline.
 Must possess an unrestricted License as a Marriage and Family Therapist for at least 5 years and adhere
to the NRS and NAC codes under the Nevada Board for Marriage and Family Therapists.
 Prefer a minimum of 5 years of successful professional counseling experience and services provided to
the Native American population.
 Must qualify and maintain license credentialing as a Nevada Mental Health Qualified Professional
(MHQP) for the collection of revenues by providing billable services.
 Be able to develop and maintain a good working relationship with clients and staff in a diverse setting
and environment, and be able to meet and deal with community pressures for the position. Must
maintain strict confidentiality.
 Familiar and proficient with the Indian Health Services Electronic Health Record and/or NextGen
Software Programs
 Proven knowledge of theories, principles, practices, and techniques of counseling.
 Ability to create reports and assessments both orally and in writing.
 Must pass a recent TB Test
 Must be able to pass a pre-employment alcohol and drug screen and pass a PL 101-630 Indian Child
Protection and Family violence Act background check.
 Must have a current CPR certification or obtain one within 6 months
PLEASE NOTE: hiring preference will be given to qualified members of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony
followed by members of other federally recognized tribes. Reno-Sparks Indian Colony requires a
designated candidate to successfully complete a pre employment criminal background check, drug screen
and confirmation of references. Must pass and comply with the HR Policy 164.905- PL101.630.
