WEED CONTROL
GUIDELINES
Blanket Weed (Galenia pubescens)
Identification
A greyish-green shrubby groundcover. Leaves are slightly succulent and
covered in downy white hair. Flowers are small and hard to identify. Grows
from a single taproot into a dense mat.
Where it Grows and How it Spreads in Hume
Occurs in pasture, lawns, native vegetation, roadsides and degraded sites.
Seeds spread via machinery and birds.
Legislative Classification
Not currently declared noxious under the Catchment and Land Protection
Act 1994.
Short Term Control
Non chemical
Roll up the plant and dig out the large taproot. Ensure plants are removed
from the site and bagged for appropriate disposal. Monitor for regrowth.
Chemical
A registered chemical is most effective when applied during the spring
and summer growth period. Due to the downy covering on the leaves a
surfacant may be required. Current best practice management suggests
manual removal is the most effective control method.
Long Term Control
Ensure you have a good coverage of perennial species (crops, perennial
pasture or native vegetation), limit soil disturbances and monitor for new
outbreaks. Remove as soon as identified.
Similar Native Species
Nodding Saltbush (Einadia nutans) has lighter, smaller and sparser leaves
with thinner stems. Berry Saltbush (Atriplex semibaccata) also has lighter,
smaller and sparser leaves with thinner stems.
