Name: __________________________________ Date: _____________________________________ REVIEW QUESTIONS—ANSWERS What to bring to the exam? YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SHARE - A working calculator - Pens/pencils - You may also bring ONE index card 3”x 5” double-sided with whatever you want written on it—BUT you may NOT bring anything to help you read your card (e.g. magnifying glass) THESE ARE BASIC KNOWLEDGE QUESTIONS! DO NOT RELY ONLY ON THESE QUESTIONS IN YOUR STUDYING!! USE THESE AS A STARTING POINT TO REMIND YOURSELF OF SOME OF INFORMATION! 1. Describe the Nitrogen cycle. Nitrogen gas is in the atmosphere. Lightning converts the nitrogen gas into nitrates and nitrites. Bacteria, also, converts the nitrogen gas into nitrates through a process called nitrogen fixation. Plants take up the nitrates through their roots. The nitrates make their way through the food chain. When plants, animals and humans release waste or die, the nitrates go back into the soil. Special bacteria convert the nitrates back into nitrogen gas and release it into the air. 2. Draw the symbols for the following: battery, light bulb, resistor, ammeter, switch, voltmeter 3. Compare series and parallel circuits. Series 1 pathway Current stays the same Voltage splits Adding more light bulbs increases resistance If one bulb goes out, the rest also go out Parallel 2 or more pathways Current splits between the pathways Voltage stays the same Adding more light bulbs decreases resistance If one bulb goes out, the rest stay on 4. What is Ohm’s Law? V=I X R or R = V/I OR I = V/R 5. What are the methods of cleaning an oil spill? Vacuuming/skimming, bioremediation, burning, dispersal agents 6. What are the 3 Laws of Electric Charge? - Same charges repel - Opposite charges attract - Neutral objects are attracted to any charged object Name: __________________________________ Date: _____________________________________ 7. What are the effects of acid rain? - Rivers and lakes become more acidic—certain plants/animals can’t handle that so their population decreases - Changes the soil by decreasing the amount of nutrients - Sulfur dioxide irritates respiratory problems - Speeds up rusting process - Damages statues and buildings 8. What was Ernst Rutherford’s gold foil experiment? He shot positive alpha particles towards a very thin sheet of gold foil. He saw that most of the alpha particles when through the sheet. This meant that atoms are mostly made out of empty space. Some of the alpha particles also bounced back. This meant that there was some positive nucleus at the center of the atom that was repelling the alpha particles. 9. What are the word equations of photosynthesis and cellular respiration? Photosynthesis: carbon dioxide + water + sunlight sugar + oxygen Cellular Respiration: sugar + oxygen carbon dioxide + water + energy 10. What does the term biodiversity mean? Variety in the species of an ecosystem 11. Name 3 methods used to control invasive species. Chemical- pesticides Mechanical- physically removing the species or putting up barriers Biological- using other animals to eat the invasive species 12. What is a food web? Many food chains intertwined 13. How do you calculate the efficiency of an electrical device? 𝐸𝑓𝑓𝑖𝑐𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 = 𝐸 𝐸 × 100 14. What is a food chain? Explain what the arrows in the food chain mean A food chain shows who eats who in an ecosystem. The arrows show the flow of energy. 15. How do you calculate that cost of operating an electrical device? Step 1: Make sure that the power is in kiloWatts. If not, convert it by dividing the number of Watts by 1000. Step 2: Make sure that the time is in hours. If not, convert it. Step 3: Use the formula operating cost = power x times x cost of electricity
