LIGHTING –MANDATORY SAFETY & ENERGY SAVING PRACTICE
Improving efficiency of energy usage by RETROFIT:–
Fast response Voltage Regulation by the individual consumer in their lighting in domestic,
commercial and industrial segments leads fewer lighting failures, less fire hazards and
achieves greater power savings!
EXISTING PRACTICE:Compared to any other electrical loads like motor, pump, fan etc they are classified as
heavy and variable loads where as Lighting is a soft load which takes only fixed watts for
given volts all the time it is ON. Now we hear many electricity related fires, mishaps etc
invariably the diagnosis points to lighting is the one of major causes. Especially the HID
High Intensity Discharge lamps fail faster due to heavy voltage fluctuations and this needs
to be avoided. When EB power interruptions are more & when power is resumed, definitely
the tube lights etc fail faster due to rush of heavy voltages. This voltage become normal
after the normal loading of heavy loads, but before that our lighting becomes victim & fail.
PROPOSED PRACTICE:If we retrofit in our lighting circuit in our domestic, commercial and in industry; an
Automatic Servo stabilizer to operate our tube lights etc at 210 volts instead of 240 volts
now, then we can avoid fire hazards, increase the life of light bulbs thus reducing &
postponing light failure, power saving around 10 %. The probable burning hours of bulb
goes up by six times when operated at 205 volts constantly instead of fluctuating voltages
above 240 volts.
LIGHTING SURGE PROTECTION:In case of domestic, industry, or commercial segments where in sophisticated electronic
equipments are put to use, it is recommended to retrofit Surge Protection Switch gear at
the incoming of the Servo Stabilizer circuit. This will protect the lighting, electronic systems
downstream against any switching surges occurring at the incoming of premises. They are
parallel protection mechanism and act in parallel to relieve the incoming volt surges to
earth and allowing the normal voltages to enter into the systems. Their response time to
relieve transients is in the order of micro seconds and hence protection to downstream
lighting, equipments is ensured.
WRONG NOTION BY THE INDUSTRY CONSUMER:Now the trend in each small, medium scale industry itself; they go in Automatic On Load
Tap Change over OLTC transformer when replacing their old Off Load Tap Changer type
transformer from 250 KVA rating onwards. But the consumer thinks because the OLTC is
there now, the voltage from EB will be regulated at the transformer itself hereafter. The
consumer thinks that his lighting is protected and the saving achieved. But it is not so!
The response of OLTC to sudden voltage fluctuations in the incoming is very slow say by
few MINUTES. Before the voltage regulation happens at OLTC, delicate electronic loads like
the lighting, High discharge lamps with electronic ballast, delicate electronic loads etc fail
due to voltage fluctuations. Even if the consumer has built in OLTC in the transformer, it is
safe to retrofit Servo stabilizer with Surge Suppressors for lighting circuits and this
stabilizer response time or the voltage correction rate is up to 60 volts per SECOND. Hence
the damage to lighting etc equipments is minimized totally.
GOVERNMENT INITIATIVE TO MAKE IT MANDATORY:The Ministry needs to take up this action immediately and make it mandatory to retrofit
Automatic Servo Stabilizer to light & soft loads especially. This is to protect from
breakdowns in lighting, electronic delicate loads in manned, unmanned areas, avoiding
electric related fire hazards etc and as well ensure power saving up to 20 % possible!
Unless this mandatory electrical safety in lighting circuits is enforced, we will not take the
initiative to retrofit the Servo stabilizers in the lighting circuits!
