Strategies to Improve Vaccination Rates
History and Overview
“Next to clean water, no single intervention has had so
profound an effect on reducing mortality from childhood
diseases as has the widespread introduction of vaccines”
(Institute of Medicine, 1991).

History and Overview
Many infectious diseases are only
a plane ride away.
Herd Immunity
When a great proportion of the community is immunized against a
contagious disease, most members of the community are protected
against the disease because the opportunity for an outbreak is small.
Immunizations and Infectious Diseases
Each birth cohort vaccinated:
Saves 33,000 lives.
Prevents 14 million cases of disease.
Reduces direct health care costs by $9.9 billion.
Saves $33.4 billion in indirect costs.
Despite Progress:
42,000 adults
300 children
