Orthodontic examinations (MEQ-3)
Matthew is an 11-year old boy whose chief complaint is his irregular teeth. His
parents observed that he has a very persistent habit of biting his lower lip.
Clinical examination finds that Matthew has exposed and proclined upper front
teeth and, incompetent lips. Cephalometric analysis reveals a marked discrepancy
between upper and lower jaws in sagittal plane, with an apparent indication of
both protrusion mavilla and retrusive mandible.
Q1.
List at least three problems that might result from lower lip biting
Answer:
1. Proclined upper frontal teeth
2. Retoclined lower frontal teeth
3. Deep overjet and/or deep overbite
4. Constricted upper dental arch
5. Retrognathic mandible
6. Incompetent lips
