island of Cyprus.
H O W WA S V E N U S “ B O R N ” I N T H E S E A ?

RELATIONSHIPS
! Married to Hephaestus, who was the Olympian
God of iron.
! Aphrodite was really in love with Ares, the God
of war. They had a passionate, but secret, love
affair together.
! FACT: Ares was Aphrodite’s brother… (YIKES!)
! She also had many other love affairs.
HEPHAESTUS & ARES
CHILDREN
Venus’ children include:
!  Eros (the winged cupid of love)
!  Harmonia
!  Pothos
!  Anteros
!  Himeros
!  Hermaphroditos
!  There may be more children not listed, but it is a myth as to if she
actually gave birth to those children or not.
APHRODITE & EROS
HOMER
!  Homer’s epic poem, The Iliad, suggests that
Aphrodite may be the daughter of Zeus and Dione, not
from the foamy waters of the sea. Many Gods thought
that she was so beautiful, therefore, possibly causing
war between the Gods. That is why Zeus married
Aphrodite to Hephaestus – because of his extreme
ugliness.
THE TROJAN WAR
! During the Trojan War, Aphrodite was on
Paris’ side. She rescued Paris (the son of
the king of Troy) from the war by
enveloping him in a cloud and taking him
back to Troy.
ANCIENT SCULPTURES
! Aphrodite was chosen to be the
model for the famous sculpture,
Venus de Milo.
THE VENUS DE MILO
I have actually
seen this sculpture
in person at The
Louvre museum in
Paris, France!
COMPETITION BETWEEN GODDESSES
!  The goddesses Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena were the
top three choices for a golden apple that was engraved
“For the Fairest” (in Greek.) They asked Zeus to judge the
contest, but he refused. Instead, Paris judged the contest.
He chose Aphrodite as the winner of the apple. This story of
the judgment of Paris was said to have been the real
reason that the Trojan War began.
THE GOLDEN APPLE
FUN FACT
! Venus is the secondary name for
the planet Venus. This is because
the planet is so bright, visible, and
noticeable in the night sky.
