PART 1 GENERAL

A. Description
1.
This section describes the materials and installation requirements for surge protective devices (SPDs) for the
protection of all AC electrical circuits from the effects of lightning induced currents, substation-switching transients
and internally generated transients resulting from inductive and/or capacitive load switching.

PART 2 PRODUCT
2.01 Electrical Distribution Equipment
A. Service Entrance or Large Distribution Panelboards
SPD shall be Listed and Component Recognized in accordance with UL 1449 2 nd Edition, effective Feb 9, 2007 and
UL 1283.
2. SPD shall be cUL and UL 1449 Second Edition Revision, a.k.a. UL 1449 Rev 2.5, effective Feb 9, 2007 listed to
200kA Short Circuit Current Rating (SCCR) in compliance with NEC 285.6.
3. For new construction applications install SPD internal to the electrical distribution equipment. Internally mounted SPD
must be supplied and factory installed by the electrical distribution equipment manufacturer.
4. For pre-existing equipment applications install external SPD.
5. SPD shall be tested with the Category C high exposure waveform (10kV-1.2/50ms, 10kA-8/20ms) per IEEE C62.41.1
- 2002.
6. SPD shall be a self-contained module design. Each suppression element shall be MOV based. Each phase of the surge
current diversion module shall be protected using 200kAIR surge rated fuses and thermal cutouts.
7. SPD shall provide surge current diversion paths between each phase conductor and the neutral conductor, between
each phase conductor and the ground and between the neutral conductor and ground. For delta configured systems, the
SPD shall have components connected between each phase conductor and between each phase conductor and ground.
8. Surge current diversion module shall be connected to the buss of the distribution equipment.
9. A UL approved disconnect switch shall be provided as a means of disconnect.
10. SPD shall meet or exceed the following criteria:
a. Maximum surge current capability shall be 240kA per phase.
b. Endurance Testing. Capable of protecting against and surviving 5000 IEEE C62.41.1 Category C transients
without failure.
c. cUL and UL 1449 Second Edition Revision, a.k.a. UL 1449 Rev 2.5, effective Feb 9, 2007 listed and recognized
component Suppression Voltage Ratings shall not exceed the following:

11. SPD shall be designed to withstand a maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV) of not less than 115% of
nominal RMS voltage.
12. SPD shall have a minimum EMI/RFI filtering of - 50dB at 100kHz.
13. SPD shall provide a minimum of visual and audible diagnostic monitoring for each phase of protection. An LED
visual status indicator shall show reduction or loss of protection. An audible alarm with on/off and push to test switch
shall provide audible indication upon any fault condition within the device. Diagnostic monitor shall be mounted or
visible on the front of the equipment panel or enclosure. Form C dry contacts for remote annunciation and a
diagnostic system test capability shall also be provided. SPD shall not require additional test equipment before or after
the installation to provide confirmation of system operation and reliability.
14. SPD shall have a warranty for a period of five years, incorporating unlimited replacements of suppressor parts if
transients destroy them during the warranty period. Warranty will be the responsibility of the electrical distribution
equipment manufacturer.
15. SPD shall be equipped with the following optional items:
a. Transient event surge counter shall be located on the front cover of the panelboard. The counter shall be equipped
with a manual reset and a battery to retain memory upon loss of AC power.
b. Remote monitor panel with indicating lights and audible alarm for mounting in a removed location.

bus bars of the distribution equipment for reliable low impedance connections.
SPD shall meet or exceed the following criteria:
a. Maximum surge current capability shall be either 160kA per phase.
b. Endurance Testing. Capable of protecting against and surviving 5000 IEEE C62.41.1 Category C transients
without failure.
c. UL 1449 2nd Edition Listed and Recognized Component Suppression Voltage Ratings shall not exceed the

C. Distribution and branch panelboard specifications:
a. The panelboard shall be UL 67 Listed and the SPD device shall be UL 1449 2nd Edition Component Recognized.
The SPD device shall have passed all UL testing required by the UL 1449 2nd Edition standard. Panelboard
markings shall include clamp voltage at the SPD terminals as well as clamp voltage at the panelboard line
terminals.
b. The unit shall be top or bottom feed according to requirements. A circuit directory shall be located inside the door.
c. The unit shall have removable interior.
d. The main bus shall be (copper) (aluminum) and rated for the load current required.
e. The unit shall include a 200% rated neutral assembly with copper neutral bus.
f. The unit shall be provided with a safety ground bus.
g. The field connections to the panelboard shall be main lug or main breaker.
h. The unit shall be constructed with flush or surface mounted trim and shall be in a NEMA Type 1 enclosure.
